Post by lukeass » 12 Dec 2018, 7:17 pm

hey guys i have RL17 powder and 125grain projectiles for my 300wsm...wondering if i can use this for 125grainers as i have only used it for 190grain loads. i cant find any info online for anyone using this powder for a 125grain projectile and wondered if anyone is using it and can help me out...just i can only get new powder from a shop 45mins away so i cant just sorta shoot down and get some RL15 which is what ultimately what i need.

Sure you can and somewhere from 68 to 70 grains should get you started. The thing about working out a load when you have no data is to start very conservative and work up from there. At the end of the day you are pulling the trigger and you cannot afford to risked based on the advice of a stranger on the net.

Let me know what you end up doing.

Unless Aliant powder is dirt cheap where you are I would stick with ADI, tons of data and we make some of the best powder in the world, apart from Finland.

You will find that 2209 or 4350 has a similar burn rate to RL17. You can use this data as a starting point, then add powder until you get the speed you want. Something over 3,300 fps should be easy for you.

125 is very light for that boomer of yours, I would stick with 180s or 200+ which is where the WSM excels. Give the 125 to a mate with a 308 or use them for plinking at rabbits.

Thanks mate. sorry only just read this as we have had our internet down for a while...f**kin telstra...I actually got the 125s for foxes and some of the smaller stuff...The powder i eventually went with is Winchester 760. Does around 3600fps!!! makes for some good flat shooting and kick isn't as bad as with 190grainers.
