Good old Three Oohh.

Post by Stoney » 18 Dec 2018, 4:56 pm

G'day Fellas,
I was at the range today having a play with " Penny ", my recently acquired " Parker Hale " .303. It was sold to me as a PH, and although I have seen early PH posters of their standard 1A? sporter which looks close I'm not sure.

Anyhoo, I wack a scope and a screw on mount on with very little expectations. I bought some PPU 180 grn ammo for tests and cheap brass, which grouped low slow and wide. So , using only a Lee Loader I started to develop loads using AR2206H, AR2208 and AR2209.

The 100 yrd group on the left is 174 grn Hornady RNSP .312 AR2206H, middle, AR2208, and right AR2209.

Not too bad for a gun made in 1942.

I would have thought that 2206h was a bit fast for a 303, looks like it is working for you. Are you finding you loose a bit of velocity compared to 2209?

Hey SCJ429, I haven't cronoed the loads yet, but if you look at all 3 it seems to me that the velocity is climbing and torqueing to the left on the 08 and 09 load. Which would indicate to me a higher velocity.

Yes the 2209 looks fastest, all the groups are respectable and you could use any of them to tune up a load. Was the target orientated sideways or you turned it that way for the photo?

No mate, target is as it was. The last time I shot the loads I shot in the top 3 and the 2206h rounds went way over so this time I shot the bottom ones. Here is the other target I shot with exactly the same loads but, the projectile seated out further. Which I shot after the first group. My .303 don't like bullets seated out beyond the cannelure it seems.

Notice once again the group rises and moves to the left. That's with seating out 30 thou. Neck tension is very crucial with the .303 it seems.

I’d love to see Lithgow release a .303 once they sort out the current issues.
Great cartridge.

It's Un-Australian if they bloody don't mate. I know there is a petition to try and convince them.

I recently sent them an inquiry asking about a .303, and the reply I got was that they don’t think it will be viable.
I guess we won’t be seeing one anytime soon then.

Surely they could do a limited run like Ruger does with it's No1's. It's bloody 2018, and they can't be innovative?

Probably the cost of R&D amortized to the limited australian market might not be worth it. Read somewhere they make 80 rifles per day, but the tooling cost for a limited run.

Ruger no1 run likely means a few hundred rifles (say eg 500) a time, for America that would be limited but for Australia it's likely about what they sell in a year.

Yes, I have to agree with you there Ziad. But it would be cool if they just made it happen.

Thre is always hope mate.

I look at ruger, the 243win is the most unloved caliber in the range, same with the 223. They rolled with 6 creedmore. Apart from marketing I can't see reason why.....esp considering 6creed has ideal barrel life of around 1k while 243 would be double.

Popular money in the bank mate. I am reading this.

The old rounds are still relevant. They are just unknown to the younger shooters.
