Burris droptine 3-9x40 .22lr or Bushnell 3-12x40 Rimfire?

Post by Beas2624 » 24 Dec 2018, 8:37 am

Hi there, I'm new to the world of shooting and have already got some trigger time on my new Savage B22 with the included open sights, but I'm now looking to put a scope in it.

It will be mainly used for plinking and target shooting with the occasional rabbit/fox hunting trip.

I am considering getting either the:

Burris droptine 3-9x40 .22lr
https://magnumsports.com.au/255/278/652 ... -9x40.html

Bushnell 3-12x40 Rimfire optics
https://magnumsports.com.au/255/278/560 ... 12x40.html

The Burris seems to be much nicer quality and looks very nice, however the Bushnell has that little bit extra magnification for the targets and the side parallax adjustability. So I'm really not sure what to go with.

To throw another spanner in the works I found some other scopes on sale (I know they are designed for .223 but drop zones are never very accurate I've heard anyway)

Bushnell AR Optics 3-12x40 AR223
https://magnumsports.com.au/255/278/560 ... ar223.html

Bushnell AR 4.5-18x40 223 BDC Reticle
https://magnumsports.com.au/255/278/560 ... 18034.html

If you have any other suggestions for that same price range that would be greatly appreciated, also what would be the cheapest place to buy them from.

Thanks in advance!

I haven't any experience with these scopes but since you haven't got an answer yet I'll say this:- Google some online reviews. I had a quick look and they're out there, but you'll have to watch/read them and make your mind up yourself since it's your cash and you have to live with it. They're entry level scopes and with optics you tend to pay for what you get, so it all depends on how keen you are. The better the scope the better it will generally hold its zero and react to adjustments better. Better optics tend to really prove their worth in low light conditions where cheaper optics struggle.

Google is your friend. Here's one to get you started. Bushnell 3-12x40 Rimfire:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZx8c3NksYw

Personally unless I was primarily going to be punching holes in paper I'd be looking for a smaller scope that was lighter and less bulky to carry around in the field, and you really don't need 12x for a .22 in that situation unless you're looking to shoot mice. Others will have different opinions. All I had on my first .22 (many, many moons ago) was a fixed power 4x30 cheapie (Tasco I think....it was back in the '70s, can't quite remember) and that helped me put .22 slugs into a great many furry critters. For a .22LR field rifle I reckon anything bigger than maybe a 2-7x isn't really necessary. Anyway, watch/read all the reviews you can and make up your mind. Someone should turn up soon with a bit of luck and provide some more informed advice.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep doing some research on them.

Good reply there from biggus

Gven you've mentioned mostly target shooting, id be going for reach...!!...meaning bigger end of magnification...

You can wind it back for the field no worries, & depending on what rifle its on, most 22's are pretty light anyway so carting a slightly heavier scope around in the field shouldnt be too much of a problem...

The bushnell 4.5-18 scope is the only one i have experience with.

I have one...now firstly, im not a fan of it--but that is probably because the next cheapezt scope i have is 3.5X the price.
I also dont like the "dots"--i feel they cover up too much.

Having said that, its a great option for cheap magnification...
And id be happy for one on my first 22...

There are a vouple of blokes on here that have them & like them...
One bloke on here has them on most of his rifles i think & rates them quite highly...hopefully he will pipe in with an opinion... :unknown:

Try & look through them all if you can...check them out on a sunny day & see what detail you see in dark shadows & bright highlights.

Once my eyes started to fail...my first optic was a tasco 6x40 world class scope...jap made & still kicking...plenty of magnification in the field & it sucessfully downed tonnes of bunnies & trailer loads of foxes...
But no good for target shooting at decent range...

My vote out of the scopes youve listed would probably be the 4.5-18...

For shops...try horsley park in Syd.

Hope that helps a bit mate...

Let us know what you end up with.... :drinks:

I’ve got the AR 4.5-18 and rate it highly. Mine is on a 223 steyr varmint and I can shoot golf balls at 200m without any problem. The reticle is a fraction thick for long distance target work as the reticle starts to obscure target when you are getting finicky - but I’m splitting hairs...
The ONLY gripe - and it’s very subjective - is the eye box is quite particular on this scope. Not a huge issue if you have your length of pull perfect. When I hand this rifle to less experienced ppl, it’s the one they struggle with to get a picture in the scope - but once they find it...all good.

At this point I think I'm going to go for the Burris, but the Bushnell 4.5-18 sound like a very good option for my next rifle! Thanks

I think I'm going to go for the Burris for now, the Bushnell definitely looks like a great option for later rifles, thanks a lot for all the info!

Seems as though the big man is indeed a shooter! He also seemed to have made his mind up for me ;)

I’ve spoken to a shop this morning, they said that as long as you’ve got the 50mm unit in 3-9 - you’ll love it, but the 40’s in 3-9 have had major issues - which is lucky for you, getting the 50mm !!

Santa must like keeping a long distance eye on those naughty children...sick bugger lol

What kind of issues did the 40mm have that the 50mm didn't?

Sorry. I’m only joking, kidding...
I thought the -“ spoke to my local shop today” would give it away - being Xmas day.
Enjoy the scope mate - all good :-)
