Remington 788 -anyone here got one?

Post by Dossa456 » 02 Jan 2019, 7:58 pm

Howdy,
just joined up hoping someone on here had some info on a 222 I just got hold of or also have the same rifle.
I got a second hand 222 Remington 788 it has a very smooth action, loose as a goose magazine, feeds ect okay though. Grabbed it because it was cheap supposedly was a good shooter. Will try out some various ammo next week.
Mainly wondering if anyone else here has the 788 in 222 and what ammo they are feeding it. Factory or handloads. I Wouldn’t have a clue if original barrel or twist rate ect.
Thanks Dossa

I don't, but my first centrefire was the 788 in .222Rem in 1983.
Never put any factory ammo through it but it shot very well indeed.

For .222 I load 22.2gn 2208 Its slightly under ADI charts recommended but simple to remember.I get around 2800fps which is more than good enough.Accuracy is perfect and by more luck than judgement the POI is the same as Highland AX at 100metres so I can top up with factory ammo and the Highland AX brass is very good for reloading.Highland ammo gets a bad rap because its 2/3 less expensive than other brands but I have found it to be excellent

We had a 788 in .223 as our station rifle for about 30 years; it finally became too expensive to repair/maintain, but by then it had fired many, MANY thousands of rounds, and had a hard life.
About the only mod we did to it was replace the trigger with a Timney about 15 years back.

Yep; magazine is loose as buggery. It seems to be a 'feature' of the 788. I understand the latter mags were plastic, but ours are metal.

Here's a link to figure out when yours was made:
https://www.remingtonsociety.org/manufacture-dates/
[Rummage around a bit on this site to get a more firm idea of yours..]

Overall, the 788 was a great little budget rifle.

However, a few problems kept coming up:
1). Dependant on the brand of primer in the ammo we were using, the firing pin would pierce the primer, and then the small disc of metal would blow back into the bolt itself. Once a few of these had happened, the firing pin would seize up, and the bolt has to be disassembled to clean all the discs out. Initially, we trialled adjusting the firing pin strike length (distance it protrudes out of the bolt face), but you walk a fine line between repeated misfires, or holes in primers. Upon advice, we switched to a heavier primer in our reloads, and while we solved most of this, we were still getting firing pin jams every so often. The firing pin has a 1-inch long tip which is just sitting on the end of the pin proper, and it's easy for this tip to get bent.
[If we'd sent the bolt to a decent gunsmith, I'm sure they could have resolved this by machining a larger firing pin hole, and pin to suit, but decent gunsmiths that you can meet face to face are a bit rare in outback QLD, and this rifle wasnt worth a lot...]
2). The 788 had a reputation for the safety being inherently dangerous due to it's design. Something about the safety getting dangerous over time with use. Advice on a LOT of the forums is to never trust the safety AT ALL. I couldnt figure out why we'd not had any problems with ours, but then I found a post by the gent who said that all of the problems with the 788 were easily fixed, and he said that the safety issue was resolved if you fitted a Timney trigger. I then realised that we'd fitted a Timney about 20 years ago, to improve the trigger, so now understood why we'd never encountered this issue.
3). The 788 had a reputation of being extremely accurate, and the .222 was supposed to be the most accurate of them all. From what I have read, they were one of the first (budget) production rifles that pretty much shot sub-moa out of the box. If the barrel is half-decent, you should find it is a keeper.
4). Our extractor failed ~18 years back, and it was cheaper/simpler to have a gunsmith machine a sako-style extractor setup into the bolt. I see the old 788 ring-type extractors are occasionally available through people like rebel Gun Works, so you mightnt need to do this.
5). SOMEWHERE in this rabbit-warren I call home, I have a bag of the bits & pieces I pulled off our 788 before it was chopped. All the screw-on metal bits, and a couple of stocks. I cant recall if I removed the trigger or not(I hope I did), but I did find the Timney packet with the original trigger in it, if thats any help. Pretty sure there is a couple of spare magazines, if you'd like them. HOWEVER, dont hold your breath while I go look for them!
6). We trialled a 'Champion' brand of synthetic stock on our 788 for a few months, but it broke in half! Never had that happen on either of the wood stocks we have here for it...

Cheers,

Rod.

very good review Rod
I would like to add to it if you dont mind

1) these pierced primers are called blanking or cookie cutting because of the metal disk it cuts out
the fix is to have the firing pin hole reamed and sleeved, or could be firing pin spring, or firing pin extrusion adjusted or sometimes changing to a thicker cup primer works
2) the 788 was one of the rem models affected by a dangerous trigger design that shot when the trigger was not cleaned properly, apparently
http://discussions.texasbowhunter.com/f ... 60141.html
Mike Walker who designed the trigger advised Remington about the flaw and gave them a fix 12 months after but it was ignored
3)The 788 had a reputation of being extremely accurate, and the .222 was supposed to be the most accurate of them all.
apparently that's why they stopped selling/making them because they cut they sales of the flagship model the BDL

the trigger is what I would change out then I recon you would have a good safe rifle

wow great information thanks,

Rod id happily take up your offers and happy to work out some sort of deal, swap you some brass or something of interest.
I got the Rifle with scope for $350 with a gunslick cleaning (brand newish) Kit 40 live rounds, 40 once fired cases, hillver mounts and a Arctic fox IR scope- i swapped this out straight away for a vortex 4-12 I had lieing around. Will be mainly used on the vineyards.
I will test out next Wednesday and give some feedback.
Still working out the forum functions will try post some snaps.

In my 222 I found winchester supreme 40gn Silvertips were the most accurate. It didnt like heavier than 50gn stuff. And I agree with the trigger, plus there can be problems with the extractor too

Dossa456,
Give me a few days to rummage around.

About 3 years ago, the local gun shop gave me all the bits off a 788 he was chopping up(.223), so I ended up with the bits & pieces for two of them (including the stock).
From my recollection, I should have 2 wooden stocks, a couple of bolts, most of the screw-on hardware, I think 2 magazines, and there should also be a picatinny rail somewhere.
All were off a .223, but all of it should fit straight onto the .222.
Stocks are in distinctly used condition(as is everything), and I think I started sanding the second one back in an effort to tidy it up, but never got to finish it. The bolt has been fitted with a Sako-style extractor, but then it also had problems with the crap getting inside it.
[My suggestion is keep it in case you have problems with your extractor, and then find a gunsmith that you can hand our bolt to and get him to rectify the problems with our firig pin.]
Big question-mark is whether I stripped the Timney trigger off before having it chopped, but until I find it all, I wont know for sure.
I have a sneaking suspicion I did remove it...

I'll get back to you when I've been rummaging...
Not really overly concerned about money for the parts; glad to see they might help someone else.

[Mind you; I've got to FIND them, first!]

Cheers,

Rod.

Re: Remington 788 -anyone here got one?

Have three 788's sitting in the safe - 222 (waiting on a new stock), 22-250 (needs new stock & I have a 24" fluted bbl waiting to fit) & a 223 version which was converted to a single shot in 22PPC. I did own a 222 15yrs ago which had the chamber re-cut to 223 & it shot like stink.

Problems I found with my 223 were the bolt stop & the trigger. Trigger was a heavy SOB & all I ever heard was replace with a Timney or throw the rifle away, trigger isn't re-workable. Well I met a 'smith by the name of Pete Nesbitt in Casino, NSW, who reckoned others were just being lazy & couldn't be bothered. Well he worked the trigger over, producing a glassrod crisp release of a tad over 2lb.

Just before I took the rifle to Pete, I had a problem where the bolt would come out if you pulled back far enough. Pete said the bolt stop had worn to a point where it no longer engaged the bolt. So he built it back up to height & reshaped it.

With a Hornady 52gn Match BTHP over 24gns of AR2206, this rifle could shoot .75" if I made an effort.

The 22PPC 788 has also had trigger work & it is very light & crisp. So the standard Remingtom trigger on these can be worked to produce very good results if the 'smith knows what they're doing. The previous owner wanted to try his hand at benchrest, but not prepared to pay for a rifle to suit. The 788 has a cylindrical action, the fastest locktime of any bolt rifle at that time, and a known accuracy potential. So he had his converted. This rifle shoots far better than I am able and I need to spend more time at the bench with it.

These rifles have a dedicated following and certain models will pull high prices. Namely the 44mag & 30-30 models. Mags can be dear to buy, if you can find one & spare parts as rare as unicorn dung. Doesn't help that Numerichs won't sell to Australian customers anymore. I managed to score the parts I needed for the PPC (bolt stop, ejector pin & spring, spare extractor clip & rivet ) as the previous guy had removed these to allow placing a round on the boltface , inserting the bolt & chambering. Unfortunately, these parts were not provided with the rifle when I bought it.

Get a few different brands of ammo with projectiles in the 50-55gn weight to try. If you reload, don't push max velocities as the rear locking action will lead to shortened case life.

Hey Dossa,

That'd be my old .222 you've got there. If I can answer any questions about it you have I am happy to, but the information from others here has been even more than I was able to find in my searching - I should have posted earlier too!

Hope the ol' girl serves you well mate. I think with that scope you've put on and some lighter projectiles than what I used it will be a real tack driver!

Hey Bridgy; yea I’m real impressed with it. Would you say the trigger has had any work done to it. Liking the idea of a timney though. Really looks the part now with the vortex on top. Taking for a proper run Wednesday mate. Will let u know the results, also I registered it the next day I picked it up lol. If ur ever up this way and wanna have a shot you can just need some notice.

I don't know if the trigger has had any work to it, but that said, when I bought it it came from a shop and they didn't have much info. When I stripped it down to clean it up I did clean some gunk out from around the trigger and added a drop of oil to the mechanism which felt to me like it improved it - it certainly didn't feel too clunky! A bit of travel in it, but it felt good. I also checked out Timney triggers for it, but at the price I was finding them for in the States I was happy to stick with the standard one!

I appreciate the invite too - if I'm ever gonna be up your way I'll definitely let you know!

I have a 22, a 243 and a 30-30 (and a 12G) and my time is pretty limited lately, so I decided I was better off selling the 222 and putting the money towards something nice for my son. I loved shooting the 222 though, I bet I'll have another one eventually!

Mate, I sent you a private message this arvo, but then realised you mightnt have gotten around to figuring them out.
I found the parts(left them with the LGS in case someone else might have a 788 and need parts), and there is an EGW picatinny rail, a Timney trigger, my original trigger, possibly 2 wooden stocks, at least a couple of spare mags, and my old bolt, which has been modded for a Sako-style extractor, as well as a heap of other bits & pieces.
LGS also tells me he has received another 788 .223 there that he needs to chop, so we are going to have a look at whats worthwhile on that one as well.

I'll likely not get the chance to get into town until mid next week to retrieve them, but if you can PM me with a mailing address, I'll get them in the post when I get the chance.

Cheers,

Rod.

Hi all took the 788 out last night with an hour of sunlight to sight it in and just have a play and do my vineyard lap.
Let’s just say I am very impressed. When I work out how to put up pictures I’ll show you some targets shooting factory ammo sighted in at “roughly a fox away distance” think I stepped out 75-80 paces. As mentioned only an hour of sunlight so was the most rushed shoot of the back of the Ute effort with a slight breeze into my face and but still over the moon with how this 788 shoots. My mate who came with me also has the 788 we made a few comparisons which was also good learnings. The trigger on mine is considerable amount lighter. Got me thinking of the history of this rifle and the Many kms it has travelled and the many more it will travel as I won’t part with it now.

Did someone say "Seven Eightee Eight".....???

Made my ears prick up & my head swivel around...(in days gone by that used to happen when someone said 'tits', now it happens if someone says 788...!)

Love mine...was the ol' mans.
Everyone tells me to sell it, but it doesnt shoot no more...some of the pics below show me draining some of the last bits of life out of her.

As has been mentioned, they have a name for bad triggers, & its interesting what Marksman says about them being dangerous....because, i developed a flinch from shooting this one. (may sound weird but its true).
Unbeknowns to me, i was starting to flinch & eventually honed in on it being due to the trigger releasing at different tension--in other words, i couldnt tell when it was going to release the shot.
Everyone says i was nuts & making excuses, so i took it to someone who had a trigger pull weight doova thinggy-bob & it showed the trigger releasing anywhere between approx 2.2lbs to 3.8lbs, but was mostly between the 2.5-3 mark...

My ol'man told me he had the trigger done on it which didnt make sense, so i got it cleaned out & now...let me tell you...whilst i dont know much about the mechanics of the trigger, it is one of the crispest triggers on a production rifle that ive shot...
I have my Tikka's wound back to as light as possible with the factory spring, & although my 788 is a little heavier (bit over 2-maybe 2.2-2.5 lbs from memory) it is every bit as crisp as the Tikka trigger.
A few people who owned &/or shot the 788's in their day, who have shot mine initially thing it must be an aftermarket trigger in it.

Ill have to watch out for the cleanliness of it though, although i knew it was just dirty, its good to know about the danger so thanks Marksman... :drinks: (not that i shoot it anymore)

Id really like to get it re-barreled one day & have a fancy custom chamber in an AI version or something, but i struggle with the cost of doing that vs just trying my luck with buying a Howa.

Anyway, Dossa456, you are a lucky man if Rod is offering you bits & pieces...and you are making me enviuos in that i wish mine still shot well...i really love mine...!

At 70-80 yards you will blow big holes in the foxes even with a 222...once you get used to it, try get comfortable with her out to 200 yds then you'll really start having some fun...

If you dont want all the bits n peices Rod has let me know & i mite buy some off you...!!

Happy to meet up if you like...most shooting i do is at bunnies between 100-250 yds & i love hunting my foxes with a spotlight...so if you're in to that... :unknown:

Mine is a 22-250

Yea mate no worries; happy to just pass on parts mate and see stuff go to good homes and keep these old girls going. Yea after sighting in at 80 yards did a vineyard lap. Resulted in cleaning up game out to 100-120 maybe and was very accurate, I’ll tinker with it a bit more probably on the weekend, and get the vortex /788 combo tack driving out to 200. Last night was really that first play experiment trouble was the sun didn’t stay up long enough.
Funny u mention the trigger I really like the way mine shoots but now I recall I remember saying to my mate “ s**t I wasn’t meant to let that shot go of just yet” resulted in a 2 inch flyer from the rest of the group. I’ll drop the timmney in straight away. As my mate also has the 788 and some spare parts I’ll pm you once we go over Them all, this most likely will be my go to rifle once tinkering complete.

Heh....

Yesterday, I found the parts I had stripped off a previous 788 .223 the LGS was chopping, and he still has the parts of mine incl the Timney trigger and modded bolt (Sako-style Extractor) waiting for me to collect. I'll pick them up tomorrow when I get into town.
LGS also has a third 788 .222 that he is happy for me to strip parts from as well, so you might end up with a lot of bits & pieces.
If any of them are of use to other 788 owners, then happy days.
There is also a half-decent wood stock that I have partly stripped and sanded, but the jobs not complete.
Is that something you'd want as well? It looks in decent shape overall.
Not sure if I'll get them into the mail tomorrow; depends on the other stuff I've got to get done in town first. Sometime mid-next week at the latest, though.
[Got to find a freaking box long enough to fit them all in!]

Cheers,

Rod.

Hi Rod
Yep would be great , I’ll go through all the bits then ensure I pass on to others that need.
Also just PM me the postage cost and I’ll ensure I cover that mate. I’ll put up on this thread for the 788 guys. And yea stix happy to meet. Two foxes went down to the spotlight last night mate, PM if u want. Still a to hesitant to put locations and photos ect up on a public forum. Not usually my thing but this post has taught me a bundle and buy the generosity is also going to extend the life of the 788 for a bit longer yet.

Here is the first 5 shot group i have shot out the 788-
80 odd yards, sun nearly down of the back of the ute, with a slight breeze in my face also after after running back from checking a few sighters as i chucked a new scope on her. This is why i was impressed. The circle is 1inch- used factory 50grns - I shot a good 3 round group with some 40grn stuff me mate had but the sun was down by that point, was a good arvo untill the spotlight switch on the 140 fell into the handle, luckily in the on position.

Good to see 788's getting some lovin'.
My first 788 was also my first rifles after a barren 5yrs thanks to my ex & needing to sell my toys!
Loved that rifle, didn't look great but it shot like stink.
After picking up the 788 in 22PPC I needed to add a few more. A 222 with no stock turned up then the 22-250. I'm going to chase Cameron H up for a couple of stocks to give both these old gems a new lease on life.

Would like to get one of the 7-08 models. Will have to chase up a couple of Timney triggers too.
