Tassie fires - Hobart in darkness

Bad fires at the back of Hobart today - there is no wind at present but they are forecast to get extreme in a few hours...
Hold on to your hats locals...

Fire is now being attended by 13 aircraft - thanks Vic and 60 units.
It’s in excess of 70,000 hectares.
Several close friends advised that bulldozers cutting upto 1 metre deep into sand tracks to try and extinguish various, were finding thousands of deeptree roots - red hot and still very much burning under the ground, where the fire had passed - scary stuff.
I have to head to west coast of state for work this week...should be interesting.
If we get a roaring 40’s blast right now - tassie could be in some trouble. No rain for a long time and so so much undergrowth...

The odd thing here is that we've also had some showers despite the heat :-)
Still not under control but I think they're making progress. It grew 2000ha. over three days to cover 30,000 acres. Yesterday they were battling to keep it from taking Willung but I believe they held it at bay. Just before midnight they dropped the red warning back to yellow. I haven't heard today that any homes were lost at Willung.

Firefighters are heroes in my book!
Wind is just picking up here now so I'm hoping it doesn't start pushing the fires again.

It’s scary stuff - the size and speed of wild fire really is off the planet. We know of some full time springs in tassie - and the entire lot are dry for the first time anyone can recall. Sssoooo dry.
