Another 243 thread

Post by Cal-ApeR » 07 Jan 2019, 8:33 pm

Hi all,

I have been tasked by my mate to help him with loads for his new How's 243 varmint. Nothing is ever easy. My favourite tikka recipe shoots very poorly in his setup. Best groups from factory and Handloaded sit around moa.

I know these can shoot much better. Wondering if there are any How's 243 owners out there who can share what works well for them. I know every firearm is different but just want to get an idea of what to try. Will mainly be shooting from the truck so varmint rounds are preferred.

Cheers

Speer 70 grain TNT and about 40 grains of 2208 should be a good start.

87gr vmax and 2208 or 2206 i have found that 06 is the best foe accuracy.

A friend of mine got one and he said that it would only shoot 87gr projectiles. He didn't talk loads though.

87 grain seems a common theme.

Azza are you shooting a howa?

I don't have a Howa but my Tikka is shooting sub moa with two different pills:
87gr Hornady SP with 33gr of AR2208.
65gr Hornady V-max with 37gr of AR2208.
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

What sort of speed are you getting from the 87 grain Hornady with 2208?

Perhaps I'm needing to try 2209. I've always been lucky with 2208 and 87 grain in my rifle but his didn't like it. 2209 might be the answer.

2209 offers a much better case fill and is kinder to your barrel.

Yep, I notice case density is better. Kind of Lucky when one powder fits all. It won't hurt to invest in 2209 anyway. I'll see how I go.

Any other loads working well in people's howas?

I don't have a chrony so I don't know. Going off the ADI load chart, it should be ~2920fps.

That is interesting as I can get 3,100 fps shooting a 90 grain pill out of a 6mm BR using 31 grain of 2208. I would have thought the 243 would be good for over 3,400 fps.

2209 with 87 grain Vmax pills is what l use. I am very happy with it as a load. The vmax’s are quite effective as a game load.

What sort of speed are you getting with 2209? Is that the slowest powder you tried?
