Metal Checkering, a bolt handle

Post by Homer » 02 Nov 2018, 7:41 am

G'Day Fella's,

A while back, I thought about Cerakoting a Rem 700 rifle of mine.
Before this though, I planned to re-cut the checkering, on the factory, Investment Cast bolt knob.

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for the kind words Stix, I wear 4x magnification glasses, when I do this kinda fine and detailed work.

They are TPS Products (USA made), 30mm Medium rings (available from http://www.brownells.com in the US).
The rings were lapped, prior to the scope being installed.
I'll swap them for a set of Low rings, when next I place an order with Brownells Australia, as they are just a bit too high.

Sorry Stix, it's been a while since I purchased any, and the AU dollar has devalued a bit since then, so?

Yes mate, I did all the work myself and it's chambered in .308 Win.
Here is a list of the work I performed on this rifle;
Trigger job of 1 1/2 pound.
Lapped the bolt locking lugs, to thier abutments.
Re-crowned the muzzle and then, threaded muzzle to M16 x 1mm.
Machined and installed a proto-type quick discharge muzzle brake.
Inletted and epoxy bedded the synthetic stock. for the http://www.lumleyarms.com , detachable magazine bottom metal.
Inletted and epoxy bedded the barreled action, into the synthetic stock (free floated barrel).
Fitted the third sling swivel stud, to the forward of action position.
Prepared and then Cerakoted (Sniper Grey) the stock, and then later, the barreled action, 0 degree scope base, etc (Coyote Tan, and Microslicked the bolt, inside and out, F/pin, cocking piece and F/pin spring).
Assembled every thing.
Fitted and lapped the TPS 30mm scope rings, and installed the Nightforce 2.5-10 x 42 scope.
Cleaned all the fouling from the barrel, and then Moly treated the bore, prior to shooting Moly coated bullets, in this barrel.

I think, that is about the exrent of it..................

Here is a group I shot with this same rifle, prior to the metal work, being Cerakoted (and with a 6.5-20 x 40mm scope on it).

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for your kind comments.

Yes, and some people will tell you that Remington barrels won't shoot!
This was a new "Pull Out", Rem 700 SPS, .308Win barrel, that Keith Hills fitted to this action for me.
FYI, the bullets have to jump 0.170", to engage the rifling, and they still shoot these size 5 shot groups, at 100 meters.....so there goes one theory!
Also, this/the ammo I shoot in this rifle, is loaded on an RCBS 4x4 progressive press, so.................there goes another theory!

Yes Homer a theory is just that a theory and not set in stone I've found all my rifles have a mind of their own
some like a certain bullet and some like on the lands and some like a big jump so the best is to find out what each individual
rifle likes as theories can be misleading sometimes
Anyway its fun finding out what a new rifle is like in working up a load for it
I only trim and neck size until the bolt gets tight to close then I FL size I don't anneal brass either
All my rifles are .5 moa or below so so far i'm doing something right

Thats it, there's lots of "Old Wives Tales" around the place.
I listen to them ........... and then go and find out what works for/in my firearm.

I'm the same as you GDB, I generally only neck size (I use Lee Collet Dies for this, in the progressive presses), and then FLS, when required.
The only kinda exception to this, is the .338 Lap Mag.
I neck size every reload, shoulder bump and also trim the cases, every second reload.
It is a brutally powerfull cartridge, and when run at Maximum Safe Working Loads (MSWL) - 250grn bullet at 3000fps, it is hard on cases, barrel and critters.

As long as you two are still together, talking and smiling, thats the main thing.
All else (including Boys Toys), comes a distant second mate.

G'Day Fella's and Happy New Year.

Since my last post about scope rings, I've replaced the rings (with Low rings- lapped) and the scope base (with an extended type).

I like the extended scope base. What brand is it and wheredoyageddit?
Also placing the bipod spigot closer to the balance point seems like an excellent idea. How has it worked out with accuracy when using the bipod only?

Straight Shooter, it's a MDT extended scope base.

I believe I may have been the first person (at least, in the 21st Century), to locate the bipod toward the rear of the forearm (just forward of the balance point).
It allows you to pan between targets, with a minimum of movement, as the pivot point is toward the center of the rifle.
Here is another example of it.

I still haven't had any Trigger Therapy with this, since the Cerakote refinish.
I'll try to remember and keep you posted on this.
