357 load for rossi 92

Post by bronco93 » 08 Jan 2019, 11:12 am

Just bought myself a Rossi 92 in 357/38. Has octagonal 24 inch barrel. Does anybody have some experience with a good load for plinking. Cheers

If anyone has good hunting loads for a 20” barrel i’m Interested. I was thinking about using 158gn Hornady projectiles

I haven't personally loaded for the .357, but if you want something with a bit more punch, hodgdon LilGun springs to mind. A quick search turns out around 16gr-18gr LilGun under the Hornady XTP 158gr - actually this is a listed load on the hodgdon website and it's listed as 1577fps out of a pistol, so it'd be trucking along with that extra barrel. LilGun is not so appropriate for lead in my experience however.

I haven't got a Rossi yet, but I have a .38 Special Uberti 66.
I like Berry's copper-plated hard-cast 125gn, but also the Hornady 200gn Interlock SP. Cast bullets are cheaper, and great for plinking, but don't have the accuracy of the copper-plated - for me.
I mainly use Trailboss as I don't see any value in pushing the toggle-link design hard.

I've tried a few different bullets that should all work well in .357 Magnum as well.

The three obvious powders in my eyes are Trail Boss, AR2205 and AP70N. In case you don’t already have it, Trail Boss should have a place in every handloader’s arsenal as it’s insanely versatile across pretty much every caliber. It’s also very economical and gives good case fill and thus lower standard deviation compared to part cases of powder(in theory). A case of Trail Boss under a lead pill is a very popular “plinking” load - i just advise you slug your barrel before acquiring/casting your lead pills - lead pills should be sized one or two thou over your actual bore diameter.

In oz AR2205 is probably the primary powder for these sorts of cartridges though - it’ll give you good performance with a little wiggle room - definitely worth getting some at some stage especially for hotter jacketed loads, but worth experimenting with lead too.

not that much of a fan of lil' gun anymore. it worked well in my old 22 hornet , but man it dirtied up the bore quick . i have ar 2205 and ar2207 i might start with these . i was hoping someone had a good pet load for this combo already . ah well , i'll wait and see

Fair enough - I haven't shot enough lilgun to really get a handle on how dirty it is - would you say it's dirtier than 2205? One thing I have noticed is 2205 is comparatively dirty - much dirtier than TB - another reason why TB is such a great plinking powder.

bigrich wrote:i have ar 2205 and ar2207 i might start with these

FWIW 2207 in a pistol cartridge is kinda uncharted territory - that's not to say it wouldn't work, it's just 2207 is fluffier than 2205 so you may run into volume issues. I once investigated using 2207 in 44mag as I wanted something slightly slower (more suited to a 24" barrel), but a full case of 2207 just wouldn't give me the same speeds as 2205, so I dropped the idea.

That's also my (recent) finding Blade - the plated bullets are as-accurate as their jacketed big brothers - and they aren't that much dearer than lead. Considering price, they give stunning performance for money. As an experiment I tried some of the 30cal Berrys through a known-to-be-accurate bolt gun and over a full case of TB they 10-shot grouped into 1/2 moa (and would have kept going!). Considering heat, possibly the most accurate plinking load I've ever seen  Just a pity they are US-made...

Agreed, the .311" 123gn Copper-Plated Berry's bullet shoots very well in my '03-A3 at around 1700fps. Hopeless in my No.4 Rifle and M91/30 though, which is what I actually bought them for :-)

You should be able to get some fine accuracy with that combo - and FWIW IMO the 357 is one of the best all-round pistol cartridges in a rifle - for the handloader a good trade off between versatility / power / recoil.

You don't have the rifle yet, but you made ammo for it?
I like to check that my ammo fits the chamber, and that it cycles in the rifle before I make up a batch of it.

Yeah I took a bit of a gamble with it, I'm too impatient. And from what I read Rossi's have a few issues with feeding rounds. But hopefully I get away with it. If not I'm gonna have fun pulling bullets

My Rossi is a pre-safety s/s and it feeds and ejects everything I’ve fed it so far . 38 spl lead target ammo, s&b hp’s and sp’s, Winchester hp’s. I’m actually impressed with my Rossi. My eyes aren’t good with open sights past 100, but with a few mods I can shoot the Rossi well under 100. I like my rifles to be dual purpose, range and hunting. I’m thinking about doing gallery rifle for fun with this gun.

Usually feeding issues in the 92 action are due to incompatible OAL - you just need to experiment with seating depth to find the exact OAL your gun likes. If you’ve already seated them to pistol spec, they’ll probably be on the longer side, meaning you can just seat your loads a little deeper to achieve reliable feeding.

But It’s always worth seating some primerless dummy rounds and adjusting them until they reliably feed - then you have your template as a future reference + any other cases where you may need to test your action...

Post your groups mate I’m interested to see :drinks:

Finally got out to range. I think i need to get a taller front post as I am having to aim about 3 inches low at 100m and even lower at 25m Here are my groups. Have never actually tried using open sights. So i reckon bit more practice and my sights sorted, I should be able to make them a bit tighter

Good shooting mate, all considered I’d be extremely happy with that - your 100m group is tight for a pistol cartridge. A good example of Rossi accuracy potential.

They are expensive, but in terms of reloading speed I really turned a corner after purchasing an electronic powder-dispenser. It automatically dispenses the next while you seat the current. I can seat 180 pistol cartridges per hour with it.

Yeah I wouldnt mind getting one, that is what slows everything down when it comes to reloading using either lee classic loader or my bench press

So what powder do people use with 357 ? I tried ar2205 in my marlin today , did a like for like swap with the Rossi , I need a scope . Anyway, 158 gn hornady xtp with 15 & 15.5 gn and cci 400 primers didn’t get fantastic accuracy. 15gn equaled s&b factory loads. So , next decision, try different powder or projectiles. Any ideas anyone ? Hunting is a consideration with the loads

Cheers
