Sightron STAC Scopes

Post by Baitlayer » 09 Feb 2019, 5:21 pm

Just ordered my Tikka varmint in 6.5 CM.Considering Sightron STAC in 4x20 x56 or the smaller 3x16.Mainly for target shooting to 5/600 m.Some hunting but not to that sort of range.Anybody had experience or knowledge of these scopes. Also looked at Bushnel AR but advised by LGS that glass is not great, especially in lower light situations.leaning to STAC. Have used a Sightron scope on friends long range target rifle.Think it was 10x50 or something similar.Nice scope but much more than interests me.Any way, any info will be greatly appreciated.

The Sightron is in their budget range and retails for $400 in the US. The glass is likely to be slightly better than the budget Bushnell AR series. You have to decide if you like the $700 Sightron better than the $150 Bushnell.

A friend has a couple of Sightron Big Sky S111 scopes, the 36x and the 50x which are not bad if you could buy them for around the price of the STAC but they are more than double that which puts you in striking distance of a Nightforce.

My budget for this scope is up to $1000.I am new to scopes in this price range. So if you have any recommendations,it would be appreciated.Much as i would like a Nightforce or S&B or such,i have a budget and I have to stick to it.I suppose I could buy secondhand but I would prefer new, having been burnt before with used items.

Why not buy a second hand scope that has a lifetime, no questions asked warranty - I know Leopold offer this and believe several other high end cos do as well - that way you can get a much better scope for your $$$ and peace of mind.

The S111 retail between $1,500 and $2,000 for the 32x or 50x.

I have seen the Nightforce BR 32x secondhand for $1,000 to $1,200. Very nice scope for not a lot of money.

If you are going to dial for range a thousand does not give you many choices but the sightrons have a good reputation in this area so if I were in your position I go the s tac

I am not sure but you may find the Sightron STAC is made in the Phillipines. The quality is not what you would see in the S111 series which is made in Japan. I appreciate your PS Deye. What scopes are you using?

If you can find a second hand Nightforce BR locally that you can have a look through, you will not be disappointed.

Nice, I like the Leupold as well and have the VX3 long range 6-20 and a 8-25 on some hunting rifles. I use the Nightfore BR and Competition Series on Benchrest rifles.

I have a sightron 10x50 cost me about 800bucks and a trip to the other side of Melbourne. I am happy with it.

I'll probably get their 8x36 that a friend has offered me next unless I can find a night force br for reasonable money.

Under 1k the are plenty of options but at least get 24/25x. But I reckon second hand Leopold is probably the best option. There was a 20x for cheap on used guns last week. There is a zeiss hd5 as well... but I dunno about their quality

I’m a bit of a bargain hunter and recently picked up a 6.5-20 vx3 for...$500 from Brisbane shop in 100% as new condition and then I found a vx 2 6-18 tactical for $700.
Out of 9 scopes and a bit of history with zeiss, meopta, redfield, Tasco, Bushnell...the Leo’s just stand above and the back up warranty is fan bloody tactic.

If you go the rail option, make sure it's a HD rail, and preferrably with a recoil lug. The T3 action has a hole to take a recoil lug on the scope mounts/rail.

I know Evolution Gun Works have both standard duty and heavy duty rails, but as I've only had an EGW standard duty rail, I cant say how much they differ.

When my T3 (7mm-08 Hunter) had it's rail fall off late last year, I was looking into why I nearly dropped a $1500 scope about 8 feet onto the ground...
Examining the mounting screws in the rail, I find all 4 have sheared off.
This is despite there being a 3-chamber muzzle brake on the rifle for over half it's life (5 years), and despite these screws being re-torqued some 4 months previously.
Since the brake being machined/installed in late 2016, I would've rated the recoil on this rifle being slightly more than a .223.

After much research, I find that most rail manufacturers are quite vague about whether they have bothered to utilise this lug on their T3 rails.
I can assure you the EGW standard rail DOESN’T, and from what I read on the EGW site, the HD rail doesn’t have a recoil lug either, though being much heavier and more rigid. Talley rails seem to be quite heavy-duty, but they also don’t have any recoil lug.
So far, I have found that Mountain Tactical definitely DO have a recoil lug, and this is what I ended up fitting to the Tikka.
I do know Warne also make dovetail scope rings for the T3 which do have the recoil lug built into the front one(removable).
Murphy Precision is another manufacturer that does a recoil lug, and I believe Near Manufacturing also do recoil lugs on their products, but I cant see any photos to be certain. I cant see any detail on the Nightforce rails, but it looks unlikely they would do a recoil lug, as they only seem to make the Standard-duty rails for the T3. Tikka don’t specify anything about their own rails, so I don’t know if they have a recoil lug on theirs.

Now, if you had a T3 that doesn’t have much in the way of recoil(.223 etc), you may never run across this issue.
However, the hard lessons learned (for me)are:-
a). Regularly remove your scope and check the mounting bolts on your T3 rail, and re-torque them to 25 inch-pounds. Note that most rail manufacturers don’t recommend Loctite(That I found at any rate)
b). If you think recoil might be a factor, I'd suggest sourcing a rail with integrated recoil lug, BEFORE your rail and attached scope fall off.

If it was me buying a T3 in 6.5CM, I'd probably lean to some Talley or Trentech 4-screw rings to suit a rail, but thats just personal preference.
