Pre or Post 64? Post you're looking at 6-900 depending on condition, Pre you could be over 2K. Cheers.

i think it depends on the condition of the barrel and accuracy really as to whether or not it's useable. but i can tell you i think it's a model 70A . it has no floorplate for a bottom empty magazine , this reduces the price a bit . a few more close ups would be a better indicator . i would hazzard a guess at $400 for a shot out barrel but good condition otherwise, to $850 for a real nice example with a very good barrel. these aren't "store prices" , add another $100 for them . take my advice with a grain of salt , this is just a personal opinion based on surfing the inter-gun-net . prices do seem to vary depending on state and reigon as well. i do own 2 model 70's so i do know a little about them . good strong actions with a simple reliable trigger that is easily tweaked . with bedding and floated barrels both mine shoot very well . hope this helps. is this a possible purchase or your thinking of selling ?

Yep found the website 1978.
Looking at it in person I would of thought 450$ 500$ be a good one to give some love too. If it was in a different caliber I’d grab it. It’s in my safe for now, might take it for a shoot and see how it groups.

Hmm- what a question lol
Ideally I would keep this just because I like the timber and blued barrel and sell my other crappola 22-250 but then again I’m a bit over the 22-250 been shooting that cal for a long time. Ideally now I am dabbing I’n the reloads I’d prefer my next caliber to be something like a 204, 17 hornet, 17 rem, 22hornet, 220swift or 257 Roberts just for something a little different.
I want everything- most my stuff I have bought opportunistically at the right price. Not to high and also not ripping someone off fair deal for all.
Except my 22-250 I’ was never happy with that thing.

Out of what you listed, 257 Roberts would be my pick

Well i imagine you can re-barrel it in any short action cartridge with that boltface (like 260 7-08 308 etc)...but 22-250 is a great cartridge in the right rifle...

I know of a later vintage mod 70 in 257 roberts, but he wants $800 for it...trouble is, it doesnt shoot, seperates cases & so desperately needs a new barrel...that makes for an expensive rifle. :(

Not sure why the swift is of interest if you're sick of the 250--they seem pretty similar. :unknown:

If you like shootin the 788/222  dont buy a 204...
Or...
If you want the barrel to last for ever on the 788, DO buy a 204...

But dont get a 204 before March...you dont want to be found out in the paddock with a pile of fur at your feet when you're supposed to be at the alter... :D

Think I’m sick of my 22-250 because the rifle is junk.
It’s not the calibres fault I know :)

I think it depends on what you use it for too with regards to whether it’s a useful caliber/rifle. In Queensland I don’t get a lot of use out of shotgun or 22lr out in the paddock. Not any rabbits around in any great numbers where I go.

Big rich that’s it - 100% agree.
One of those things though- did you ever hear about the bloke that sold that gun he didn’t use but then regretted it. ?? I don’t wanna be that guy for the sake of putting some coin back in the wallet. Will keep it so mates can borrow on trips and backup rifle! untill the safe door gets tricky to close or if times get tuff finance wise.

I’m that guy ! I sold my 22 hornet, then regretted it as even though I didn’t hunt with it, I enjoyed loading and shooting it at the range. I ended up buying it back....

I’ve lost a bit of sleep over this gun and considering turning it into a bit of a project.

Any advice on a decent barrel and what brand do people lean towards? I’ll be going for 257 Roberts.
Advice on companies in SA to do the work?
Roughly an indication on cost for barrel and fitting?

I would give the timber a sprouce up myself I enjoy doing stocks.

I can't help with recommending anyone in S.A, but a re-barrel job won't leave much change out of $1000. ( For a quality stainless barrel anyway )
You have to decide if that's what you want to put into it.
As for the .257 Roberts, it is a great round for most shooting in Australia. You can load up light ( 75gr ) bullets for varminting, 87 - 100gr for medium game, through to heavier (115 -120gr) for bigger pigs and deer. ( bear in mind it is under minimum caliber for the larger species of deer where such caliber restrictions apply.)
Get a 1 in 10" twist, pretty standard for .25 cal. With the right load and application, it can be a great hunting round out to 400m.
P.S. I actually used my .257 Roberts for silhouette when I first started in the sport and never failed to knock down any 500m rams that I hit with 120gr Speer hunting bullets.

Thanks for the advice :)
I’ve got a 270 for the deer hunting I do so I’m covered there.
Hmm decisions to make.
