What's missing

Post by Jon79 » 12 Feb 2019, 2:13 pm

Looking at getting another rifle, tossing up whether to double up on a calibre and upgrade or go for something different to fill a gap in what I already have :unknown:

I currently have a 22 Air rifle, 22LR, 12G, 223, 243, 308

Of you wear a pink tshirt grey a 6.5manbun or if you have rocks in your jocks get a 300wm.

If you are da boss than 338lapua and if you are the boss but someone else paying 50bmg.

I think you are pretty alright there.

7mm REM mag or a 7rum best thing about these two is no need for a muzzle break

Looks like you have most things covered with that lot mate. If you’re likely to hunt bigger game then go for the 300WM or something in the 338 family.
If you want something that fits in between what you have then maybe a 7.62x39 for pigs in close country, or a 6.5CM to do some distance shooting.
So much to choose from. I have a similar lineup to you and was considering a 300AAC not long ago.

No pistol-caliber lever-actions? A .357 or .44 Magnum is fun.
A selection of milsurps is always good.
And a blackpowder muzzle loader!

that's a nice spread of calibers, i suppose if your looking at another purchase, it depends on what you hunt and what your interests are , and whether or not your into reloading. the last bit about reloading is relevant to the cost of non-mainstream calibers . 22 hornet factory ammo for example, is expensive for what it is, and some ammo calibers can be hard to get in regional areas. if you hunt in scrub country, a good lever gun might be useful . for giggles a milsurp or black powder might be fun . if you range shoot maybe look into what comps they have . feild rifle, gallery rifle maybe ? hope this helps, cheers

All your current choices have been very practical and utilitarian, what you are missing is something a bit special. Something no one else has seen much less fired. My suggestions are either a Lazzeroni Warbird 7.82 or a 505 Gibbs.

There are some good answers amongst the replies here...
(Mind you i dont know why you'd choose a 25-06 over a 257 Roberts given recoil & muzzle blast... :unknown:
:sarcasm:  )

BUT...you havnt said what you do &/or like... :unknown: (sit in one place & wait for deer...shoot indoor targets at 20 metres...whistle foxes...head shoot rabbits at 300m... shoot gongs at "he-man i rule" ranges... :sarcasm: :unknown:

So...there are but 4 options you have...

Buy a headache inducing shoulder dislocating barely legal bangy thing that moves spectators & potential shooters on to other hobbies...

Or....
Have a custom built & chambered smallish-medium calibre long range 600 metre bunny-ear piercing round that can also drop pigs...(yea baby...!!)

Or..are you crazy.... :unknown: ...you need 2 more...
if you hunt & shoot little critters up to & including roos...
Just buy a decent rifle chambered in 204R... (or buy a 204 & you WILL hunt little critters up to roos...!!!

AND.....you dont have a lever man...!!!
Watch a John Wayne cowboy shoot-em-up movie on Sunday when you're hung over...!!!...then go & buy a lever...what cartridge...?...doesnt matter as long as its a centrefire...!!!
:drinks:

(Hey...Bill's suggestion is pretty cool too--along the lines of the 204--a 17/(20cal) would be a heap of the cheapest & most spectacular feral pigeon exploding fun anyone ever had...!!!)

I blabbered on a bit there...very unlike me... :)

I was under the impression that 25-06 was a good long range caliber. I have talked to a few fellas that reckon they’re great. Can you elaborate on your opinion please ? I’m not being argumentative, just trying to learn. Cheers

Hi mate, I do a bit of everything, pick off bunnies on the warrens or walk through the tussocks and pop them with the shot gun, whistle foxes and also spotlight them and shoot them at longer ranges.... I’ll go for a wander and pick off a the odd fallow deer (would like to get away and try my hand at other types), also like shooting pigs and goats & have been shooting a lot of roos on permits lately

For the bunnies and foxes I’ve been loving my 22hornet lately. I don’t reload so I’ve been spending a bit of cash but meh....

For bigger stuff Ive been contemplating a 22-250.
Not quite big enough for your pigs and deer but great for the Roos and a nice fill in caliber.

I gave a young bloke a go of a big bore on the weekend, he politely declined a second shot. At least he had a go and will probably remember the experience.
