I can understand wanting to collect the bulldog hood ornaments; they are an iconic thing.

I just cant understand dressing up a Landcruiser as if it's the bastard child of a Mack truck shagging a Mini...

I'd kill for one of the Hispano-Suiza hood ornaments(flying crane). One of the reasons to watch that Miss Fisher's murder mysteries, is that HS roadster she drives.
But if I ever find one, I'm not going to bolt it to my elderly Landcruiser wagon...

On the subject of hood ornaments, I've had this fella since I was a teenager.
I've only ever seen two others the same, and to this day still can't get proof positive of what it is off.

Anyone know for sure ???

Mate,

It looks like this guy: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ ... ascot-hood

Suggestions are a 'La Salle' "Rocket man" hood ornament.

Possibly only on export models.
Roughly 1927 or therabouts.
[I did also see one branded a 'Syco' Rocket man, but not sure what that means. Syco might have been an after-market accessory maker??]

I got a bit side-tracked; thought it might have been of Icarus, but it seems to be of a Rocket Man...

Cool looking piece, but there were some stunning hood ornaments from the late 1920's through the next decade!
I wonder; did he have the rockets up his backside??
[He might start the day on a fresh cup of 'Mysore Nuggets'!!]

Cheers,

Rod.

Forgot to add: LaSalle were a car company set up by GM to produce a slightly cheaper, more sporty alternative to the Cadillac.
Most of the car was built by Cadillac.

Conflicting info on what period your Rocket man is from; some suggest 1927, wheras other info suggests very early 1930's.
Also, not certain the 'Rocket Man' was fitted to very LaSalle; it might have been used to designate the models with the larger V8 motor, or possibly export models (or simply an accessory if you chose it??).
Latest I can see that Rocket man was used, is about 1933.

One of the sites said this about the ornament:
"Addendum: It is a rather indistinct makers mark on base, looks to read "R R LAWENSON", a google search reveals no information about this company."

Found this gent selling same in Australia: https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/ ... 30b4ce78e6

WOW, thanks Rod, you got it right.

I am what we (family) say,,,,,, a "YFI",,,,,,,, (You F******g Idiot)

I never thought to try Dr Google.
I took it to many swap meets, and no-one got it right.

One bloke in particular had a book about 1 1/2" thick specifically on hood ornaments, but it wasn't listed in that either.
As an aside, the book had a complete chapter that dealt solely with hood ornaments made by the Gestapo,, that was mind boggling.
There were at least 80 or 90 different ones I think. With high quality photos of most.
Maybe if they hadn't spent so much time and money making them,,,,,, they might have won the war.

Back to Rocket Man,,,,,,,,,,,, he isn't short enough to be Korean.

I actually had this fellah mounted on the bonnet of the 1st S Series valiant I ever owned, back during the 1970s.

I've only seen 2 others.
One was in a glass case in a car museum in WA, with no info supplied, and the other one was listed on Ebay, but by memory didn't sell.
I don't recall any actual info being with it other than "Rocket Man Hood Ornament".

The one you posted the link to that was sold, of course had no $ figure attached. Not that I'm gonna sell mine, but I am curios.

Thanks for your time and effort researching, much appreciated. :drinks: :friends:

No need to apologise, you can call my truck a ute or SUV whatever else makes you happy. But since its my truck it gets called a truck (a habit I picked up from living in Texas for a few years ... people would look at you weird if you tried to call your truck a ute) :)

Got roped into going to a car show down in Adelaide so I peeled the ute out of the shed, hosed of the dust and took it for a blast. The fella running the show sent me this picture

I found this old beauty lying in a creek in one of the valleys down the back.

It's an Australian made 1939 Chev Ute.

I had all manner of fantasies about rat rodding it but alas, regulations got in the way.

To build my own chassis and suchlike to do that sort of project entailed multiple inspections and tens of thousands in inspection fees alone, for "safety" reasons because that would make it an "Individually Constructed Vehicle".

Yet, the authorities so concerned about my safety and that of other road users are happy for me to source 90yo parts off Fleabay, whack them on and my local mechanic can give it a blue slip rego inspection for $38 and I'm on the road, as a "restored vehicle".
First rabbit I run over would no doubt write us both off.
Safety my hairy arse.

Bloody hell roadworthy certificates are cheap up there down there in Victoria kiss $200 goodbye and they always find at least another thousand bucks in parts and stuff to bolt on to your car to past the inspection

I do whine a bit about Nanny South Wales, but far canal, $200 is outrageous.

The gun laws here a bit restrictive but WA makes us look like Texas.
