9 mm - to crimp or not to crimp?

Post by snag » 11 Mar 2019, 6:54 pm

I'm just getting into pistols and will be reloading for a 9 mm CZ. Do I need to crimp the necks with a crimping die or is the automatic crimp in the Lee bullet seater enough? I'll only be using light loads on paper targets. Thanks. Snag.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

First thing, don't seat and crimp in one operation as you'll get inconsistent results. Seat first then crimp, you need only just enough to remove the flare / bell created prior to seating. Measure the mouth of a sized case then use that measure to set your "crimp" to. My personal preference is to use the Lee factory crimp die for 9mm :)

Same here. I don't like to seat and crimp at the same time. I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die.

Thanks for that, looks like I'll be buying the 4 die set.

Appreciate the help.

I used to seat and then crimp with lee factory crimp die. However, I have been shooting more and more, I am still reloading on my Hornady Iron Single stage press. I shoot about 1000 a month, getting lazy so i opted for the seat and crimp together with hornday custom die. I shoot IPSC, where ammo consistence isn't as important as ISSF. I honestly don't think there is much difference. The bullet weight and powder combination on the other hand makes a bit of difference i have found.
