I read somewhere in a book now, that with modern boat tail projectiles and ballistic hunting tips, the 06 hits with more energy at 500 yards, than the 300wsm at 100 yards with older style slugs.

I would like to see the data, are you saying that with a 180 grain boat tail the 30/06 has more energy at 500 than a 180 grain round nosed bullet from the WSM at 100? I am sure you don't believe this.
You also might be surprised how capable the 270 is, at 500 metres it has a ballistic advantage over the 30/06. They are both very capable cartridges and neither kick like a 45/70.

Here was where I saw the details about the 06 vs 300;

I knew I saw it somewhere....

judging by the difference in the mess made by my 300win vs my 270 I would suggest that the video maker is just a fanboi.. the 300win is far more devastating than pretty much anything in the 30-06 case family except maybe a hot loaded 338 A-Square.

that's a big reason why I use the 30-06 and stopped using my 300wm for meat animals
shoot a deer in the big toe with a 300wm and most of the body will be bruise because of kinetic shock
I do like the 300wm and will one day get another
marksman wrote:I can see you are as hooked on the 30-06 as I am Tassie
there are other rounds that will do it flatter but who cares as you said " Means nothing to the deer..." and dead is dead
I have a few rifles I can take out but usually I am just grabbing the 06, dont worry though they get the job done without a hitch
I have used mine supported and unsupported to shoot deer out to 400 easy but would go further out with it
I do not have a 7mm rem mag but do have a high opinion of it if I were to compare
