I already have an ata u/o 28 inch clay / field shotty but looking for some fast follow up shots - and a bit of an all rounder...rabbits, wallaby, duck, clays, fun.
Just wondering how much difference is there between the 20” and 28” barrels?
Is recoil significantly more with short barrel?
Is the Balance affected with short barrel?
What is the spread difference between short / long barrels - obviously the short barrel is going to spread faster but is it unusable past 50metres as a result?
50m is a hell of a long shot on birds or rabbits, especially with a short barrel.
I took lots and lots of birds with a 20" pump, but only when they were flying directly over me near the deck. Huge swarms of galahs and starlings. They'd hug the ground but pop up over the fence lines so that's where I'd wait for them and hit them head-on or side-on with eight round bursts. I rarely, if ever used a gun on rabbits or birds sitting, rifles just do the job so much more effectively.
I don't recall ever shooting clay with it, but I would certainly think longer tubes would be more effective for that.
I want to get the 20" barrel for my 28" Dickinson as the gun is pretty unwieldy compared to my double 30". Barrel swaps are as quick as with a double, just a big nut on the end of the mag tube. While I don't mind the Dickinson, the Stoeger has the better ergonomics for me.
I had thought recoil would be somewhat lighter with a short tube due to reduced velocity, but I've never compared two similar guns side by side, and a quick Google indicates that a 20" only loses maybe 50fps over 28" barrels so I guess it would beat you up a bit more due to the reduced mass.
