Hornady 103g eldx 243w load data

Post by bones-350 » 14 May 2019, 6:42 pm

Any one got load data for 243w 103g eldx bullets using AR2209 powder.
I asked Hornady and got 2 different answers. Check out their 2 replys cut and pasted them below.
My question to Hornady was:
Hi I have a S/S Krieger .Barrel #5 contour 24" .243w 1:8t fitted to a S/S Vanguard action. I'm looking at loading the Hornady 6mm 103g ELDX projectiles for the above rifle. 1. Does my barrel meet the requirements of this projectile. 2.If so can you please send
me load data for H4350 and H1000 and recommended primers. Thanks
1. Thank you for writing in to us. Your barrel twist does meet the requirements to shoot this bullet. We don't have data for H1000, but H4350 starts at 38.3 gr and
maxes at 41.0 gr. I prefer Federal large rifle primers, followed by CCI then Winchester.
My second question was;
I recently purchased 103g eldx projectiles to use in my 243w rifle. Can you please inform me what the recommended COAL would be.
2. Thank you for your email. We have do not have any specific data for our 103 ELDX in 243 Win. I can tell you they like to be .015-.020" off the lands and will
need an 8 twist to stabilize.

Figure this reply out from a well known company like Hornady!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Start with data for a 100gn or 105gn jacketed bullet.

Not sure what you are asking as it seems Hornady have given you all the info needed to start your own load development to suit your particular rifle

I use another bullet which is 105 grains, and found 41 grains of 2209 got me over 3,100 fps. I ran it up to 3,300 fps without pressure signs. The COAL I used was 2900 but this is not a ELDX.

I am using a Maddco barrel 1:8 twist, Lapua brass and CCI BR2 primers.

I did not try H1000 or 2217 but tried 2225 and ran out of room in the case at 3180 fps. I also tried 2213 short cut with good results but will stick with 2209. I hope this is somewhat helpful.

If you read the below post it is the last of the 3 emails which I received from Hornady It contradicts the load data they supplied me in the first 2 emails.

I read that as not specific to your rifle, COAL or BTO measurement is going to be different in every rifle so they have given you the jump that these projectiles prefer. Perhaps if you can't work that out you might need someone with more experience to give you a hand

Hi Strikey
My main concern was if Hornady's suggested load data was safe to use a 243w rifle for developing a load.
Start at 38.3g and a Max at 41.0g.
I'm not one to take risks with incorrect charge loads....

You need to start low with any data but keep going until you are satisfied with the speed or you start to see pressure signs. My own experience is that you can push way past 41 grains. Be brave and have a go.
