Is this cleaning rod fine?

Post by Snip3o » 21 May 2019, 6:10 pm

So after hearing the issues about the aluminium 3-piece rods (the Hoppe's 9 cleaning kit I bought came with one) I was worried and started looking for a coated steel 1-piece rod. https://shop.birchwoodcasey.com/product ... nd-up.html This one looks relatively fine for my .22, and fairly cheap, wondering if any of you have used this or have any cheap alternatives that won't break the bank?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply! I feel like the expensive carbon rods would be worth it in the long term, will last longer for the rod and take care fo the rifle the longest. 60-70 bucks is certainly not too bad!

Honestly, I used a Hoppes 3 piece rod for many years. I would just use it till it breaks. Most of the gun acesdories are over priced if you think retionaly about it. Its a piece of steel rod for christs sake.

I see where you are coming from but aluminium is a soft metal and will collect the debris/dirt from the bore over time, and running that down the rifle can ruin the rifling quite easily, getting a good quality rod is a lot more cheaper then getting a new gun or barrel replacement/repair. Plus the 3-piece rod that came with mine is a bit flimsy.

Bollocks, just wipe the rod clean after each use. Rod should never come in contact with the bore anyway. In any case i dont tnink i bit of carbon material occassionally coming in contact with the bore compares with say, 2000c deg and a copper bullet being jamed down a bore at say 2600fps.

Obviously so e people have very deep pockets.

Yeah was about to say that, as long as you clean it you should be fine, I just want a one piece rod because it's less flimsy.

That is true but the 3 part one will do the job. I see its a 22, so only needs cleaning every few thousand rounds, its not a 45-70.

If its new swab out the barrel to remove any oil or grease. Clean the bolt etc and lightly oil. Dry yhe bore (very important to prevent a bulge) and shoot it. You may not clean the bore again for years.

And use a rod guide of some sort.

The bore guide is a big help in preventing damage to the throat no matter what rod you are using.

Just be careful using a .22 caliber cleaning rod on a .22 rifle, sometimes they're a very tight fit through the barrel or just won't fit at all. If this is the case you'd need to get a thinner .18 or .20 caliber rod so it fits through easily. As others had mentioned, definitely use a bore guide.

Alright no problem, will buy a bore guide first.

I will probably end up buying the Hoppe's 9 elite one when I can be bothered. Seems really good.

like everything nothing is perfect scott :unknown:
I own 2 and have had to work them eg... oil the bearings ect I have even bought new meter length carbon rods and changed them over because I thought the handles work that well, I have cleaning rods that cost a sh!t ton more that do not work as well or even at all
they are the only rods that I can 100% guarantee will turn properly in the bore
I like em anyway :drinks: :drinks:

That's what I thought  . But I think i'm just gonna go the premium and buy a Hoppe's elite carbon rod. Probably for no reason, but I will probably forget I payed that amount since i'll be using it quite a lot.
