Making stuff - so I can make stuff.

Post by Noisydad » 28 Jul 2019, 2:14 pm

Up to now, when I’m in my “studio” making stuff and flinging sparks around, I’ve fumbled along holding jobs in the vise or clamping bits to lumps of steel held in the vise and working on my knees on the floor and I’m over it - BIG time!
I have quite a few projects in the queue so I built a welding bench. It’s 1000 x 900 and mounted on castors so I can move it around the shed easily. The castors are retractable when it’s in position.
The deck size was determined by steel I had on hand. Each deck piece can be tilted a little or lowered to accommodate protrusions.
The angle irons for clamping parts to the bench can bolt on anywhere and at angles. The bolts for these have handles so they don’t need spanners. The clamp tower will also bolt on anywhere and the arms are telescopic. It doesn’t need to apply any great clamping force, rather, it’s just got to hold parts in position.
All up it weighs 130kg.

Mate,,,,,,,,,, judging by the "weld" in 1st pic,,, you either need more amps, or a change of polarity.

If either or both of those fail, I'd concentrate on technique.

Looks great Noisy...

I like the colours to easily determine the different bits...& especially like the handles on nuts on that angle...

You'll have to post up pics of the first thing you make, while making it in the thing you made...lol

Some people are happy with " birdshit" welds and sometimes they surprise me how strong those welds can be

The clamp parts and angle iron brackets were painted so they’d be easily spotted and not be cut up for something else. Likewise the bolts and nuts were painted so they can found when they fall into the black hole that exists in my shed. There are also storage hooks on the bench legs for all the bits and pieces.

Paint those hooks too noisy...or some star dropper caps...or dont drop too much stuff...you dont wsnt to headbutt a hook on the way down to pick up a nut...

I know a guy who cut hooks off the back of his shooting frame for that reason...he nearly lost an eye a few times so it was off with the grinder...
