Aschutz 1710DHB .22lr

Post by Member-Deleted » 14 Aug 2019, 1:36 pm

Hi all, just joined today, I have been shooting rimfires and other rifles for over 50 years, I am not new to rifles as I have spent many years in the Army and have been hunting since 10 yo and competition shooting on and off the last 5 years. My issue is I cannot locate a decent forum to gather some information, after spending days on google I'm hopeful somebody on this site may have through experience faced the same or similar issues that I'm facing.

I purchased a 1710 DHB with the match 64 single stage trigger (Group 5096) as that is the norm and how they come out of the factory, so I been told by Nioa, at any rate I purchased the rifle as in brand new condition unknowing the seller was full of BS and somebody has mucked about with the trigger in a big way, the trigger weight spring was replaced by one that resembles a Bic Pen spring, to further aggravate the situation the sear engagement 3mm grub screw has been so badly butchered that I had to drill it out and replace it. I found out there was a problem with the rifle at first attempt to sight her in, she would fire upon closure of bolt, moving the safety and even at the tap of the rifle but only intermittently?, yet the trigger felt if anything heavy and not crisp, I had shot many Anschutz's over the years to know what a match trigger should feel like, unfortunately largely this was my fault for taking the sellers word and not dry firing it ( He didn't want me to for fear of damaging the pin, even though I told him that with the 1710 you can do that quite safely without fear of damage, further the action screws looked new and showed no tampering, pitfalls of buying second hand I guess ) so after the first outing at the range I had no option but to pull the action and have a closer look. The sear engagement was the main culprit which is now resolved.

My questions are:
I cannot locate a simple trigger spring anywhere and to order the factory spring will take over 6 months, does anybody have a contact for specifically Trigger Springs in Australia? O/S will not ship any rifle components been down that road already, the normal google hunt resulted in the purchase of about 3 dozen various springs but non are really suitable and the trigger is anything but crisp or light enough without being stupid. Better still does anybody have the part number of any replacement springs that you know work well in the 64 action, I have not seen the need to go to a gunsmith for a spring replacement, easy job and having a Mechanical Engineering background I have and can fix most issues on my rifles, I did ring a couple of the better renowned ones and they both suggested that in this case a replacement spring is the best way to start and move forward.

Overall I am not that happy with the whole trigger, not sure what the new generation 1710's are like out of the box but mine is a definite dog for now, so my second question is can a 2 stage trigger be installed and where to procure that from again without waiting 6 months or having to go OS.

Thanks in anticipation

Has the rifle been bedded at any stage. I have seen one that when the take down screws were tightened and only slightly the action would not work properly. The safety would not work the bolt was stiff. Second had can be a real bitch. My understanding is that all 1710 have the 54 action and a double trigger.

Can Potter Firearms help you out? Also most gunsmiths seem to have a draw full of springs.

The rifle has not been bedded, all 1710's come out of the factory with the single stage trigger, Anschutz Germany and Nioa have confirmed this.

I've owned a number of 1710 DHB Classics - All have been fitted with springs from these kits:

The 1710 can be fitted with both the 5096 single stage & 5109/2 two stage triggers but you will pay dearly for a new replacement at current exchange rates.

I have replaced both the action takedown screws and the spings in my trigger and bolt from memory. I just found the email and invoice and it was from the same place as Allan has recommended. There was no problem shipping to Australia and they were very prompt with delivery.

we have both the items you need and we do ship to Australia on a regular basis. Here are the links:

Huge Help with the springs, thanks heaps, yes you are correct a new trigger assy is very expensive, I would move the rifle on if it were not for my conscious, I cant do something like this to an unsuspecting buyer, so maybe it will end up as a keeper if I can get her back to what it should be for a $3200 rimfire.

I feel your pain...It's not long ago that I was buying 1710's for $1,800.00 NIB! I'm picking up a new 1761 this afternoon - Think it will be well north of $3k.

If you like the balance and handling of the 1710, may be worth your while to see if you can sort it. I've owned most of the best bolt action 22's built over the past 50 years - They don't come any better than a decent 1710/12 IMO.

Agree totally mate, I will get her integrity back one way or another, the trigger spring is now the only real hurdle, I have fixed all the other issues and had the side or face of the trigger group lazer welded at work which worked a treat so now the spring or correct spring is the key to success, lucky through work I have a million contacts but so far non had paid dividends out of off shelf springs so I will get some made which will work out cost wise better, JP is $30 USD for 3 springs and $38.50 USD to ship so all up cost $98 AUD which is nothing short of ridiculous. A specialty spring maker will custom make 10 of each one specified for $12/10 much better only draw back is I have to specify load ratings compression rates etc, just means more technical work but I can do it even though I'm very time poor these days. You will love your 1761 my other crazy mate shoots nothing but Anschutz and he has one, deadly accurate and amazingly built, the quality is second to non, you will enjoy Allen.

Thanks again for your help
Cheers

I was going to suggest that but not everyone has access to a specialist small spring maker. I was chasing pull weight springs for a custom built Cooper 57M once and had a specialist wind me a few in various wire thickness - Worked a treat.
Collected the 1761 this afternoon - Bought it for my wife - Not sold on the plastic TG or magazine design but the rifle functions perfectly and I'm impressed with the overall engineering and build quality.

Awesome Allan, plastic fantastic seems the normal these days, but not much we can do in that area, most of my rifles are what many would call old school but I'm a bit like you, in my books plastic does not belong on firearms, I understand that it is just as good and in some cases better but not according to my taste buds,, LOL hope the boss is happy and as long as that remains were clear of danger, lol, have fun.
