Role Call 357magnum users, past and present

Post by mickb » 27 Aug 2019, 12:15 am

How many fans of the 357 magnum in long guns are out there, or any else who has pulled the trigger on one?

I am pretty big fan of the little case myself in lever guns. Getting into it for the first time I considered pistol cartridges a bit of an obscure novelty, so I was surprised to find them more popular than I thought. There are currently 16 going for sale on usedguns for example. Not exactly 30-30 or 308 level numbers(40+), but still beating calibres like 6.5, 25-06 for ad numbers.

Would it be fair to say its moderately well represented in the game fields? Or would a lot of this popularity also be the advent of cowboy action shooting?

Also back in 'the day', aka 70's and 80's and 90's do any of the older members know if 357 levers had any showing in Australia?

I still need to find a .357, but I'm enjoying .38 Special. I had no interest in levers back then so I don't know how common the pistol calibers were. I knew the Ruger .44 Mag semi-auto was available though.

G'day mickb,
357 in rifles only really came about with the advent of SASS in Australia. The cowboys adopted it as a modern version of the old 38-40 which was popular in the Model 92, along with it's big brother the 44-40. In the 70's if you wanted a small caliber game rifle you bought a US 30M1 Carbine, or a Mini 14. Lever action had pretty much settled on the 30-30 or Marlins big 444, with a few "exotics" like the BLR and the superb Sako Finnwolf in a smaller rifle caliber. Now we are spoilt for choice in lever rifles in 45-70, 22rf, 38spl and 357 plus the old time favourites in 44-40 and 45lc as well as the rifle calibers. Funnily enough the 444 Marlin seems to have dropped away these days. I don't have one, won't have one either, 357 for me is a pistol only thing, and if I get a rifle in a pistol caliber it will be an original Winchester in 25-20 or 32-40, something old, like me! Cheers.

Nice boar juan! No1mk3, thanks for that historical update. Growing up I don't remember the calibre being overly popular here, so its fit in with what you are saying. I remember one of the revolving carbines were being sold way back. Blokes were buying them and chopping them into revolvers, of course nothing being registered back then.

Nice pic wrenchman. By the way to the american posters if I use the term yanks on any forums, it is in a friendly manner. Lot of respect for your hunters and gunowners.

I recently bought the Alfa-Proj .357 mag revolving carbine. Got it to group the Hornady XTP OK but cant get it to group any hard cast lead yet. The XTP,s are a bit expensive for plinking.

Yeah just joined the 357 rifle club, sort of wanted to test the water after mucking around with the 256 win.

Havent reloaded for it but I have notice that not all brass is created equal lol.

Found out starline is crap but getting good results with CBC brass.

Keen to do some plinking should be good little bunny buster

Picked up my Marlin in 357 to replace the 30 M1 carbine that had to be handed in in the land off the free back in 1996. It was an easy choice since I’d owned a revolver in the caliber for 8 years prior. It wears a Leupold 1.5-5 scope, and as others have said is a beaut pig muncher over shorter ranges. Haven’t crunched the numbers but in an “in the field” situation seems to fairly easily pip the 30 Carbine performance wise. What’s good about it - heaps of projectile choices (and in rifle these can be driven at higher revs than pistol - so you’ll typically get good expansion) small rifle primers, cheap to run ... and with the advent of trailboss some great subsonic potential exists for cheap, recoil free/low noise plinking, and 38 special can be happily run to make the plinking even cheaper! This particular rifle has micro groove rifling that allows some accurate shooting if you take the time to experiment with loads - with zero effort on my part it’s won me gold medal at SSAA state level and silver at National level. So all round it’s a keeper that I almost certainly would have never contemplated pre 1996. Thanks Mr Howard!!

What was wrong with the starline brass you used? I have heaps of brass for 357 so have never bought starline. I use and like starline brass in 38-40 and 44-40. I also have 45colt starline brass but I've been thinking of trying some Winchester brass for the 45

Hey Kelsey, primer pockets a bit on the large size, tried 3 diff primers and none feel tight enough, vertical cracking on a few cases heads yet the same loads are fine with the CBC brass.

Maybe just a bad bunch as plenty of positive reviews re starline

A few boys at the range reckon the federal stuff is good quality, but that's loaded ammo, not sure they sell brass

I did own a Marlin 1894 Carbine in 357mg. The short 16" bbl made for a very handy little rig in the thick stuff. I run 158gn JHP projos over a wamish load of Win296. It hit with authority up close. Sold it as I was chasing a Finn M39.

Currently have levers in several pistol cartridges - 25-20, 32-20, 44-40 & 44mag.

Rossi do a good Win '92 copy in .38/.357, expect to do a little tuning and adjustment and probably Tru-Oil the timber to weatherproof.
My favourite is the 16" BBL carbine, shots either of the above rounds faultlessly and hand loads can get impressive velocities with AR2205 out of the longer [than pistol] barrel.
Excellent website is "The Rosssi Rifleman" a gold mine of information ex very nice blokes.
Hornady XTPs are very effective but expensive, Len Steele of Armoury & Ammunition Services in Dandenong have a good quantity of 158gn FMJ projectiles [ex the old Maribrynong ammo factory] at a good price, good man to deal with also.
Rossi at one time produced the rifle in 454 Casull, the skinny little butt plate of the '92 would make that hard on the shoulder LOL.
Importer is OSA [Outdoor Sporting Agencies] in Melbourne, stock levels seem to fluctuate, I traveled from Melbourne to Dubbo to buy my last one used.

I just picked up a Rossi 92 in.357Mag. I wanted the 16" Trapper but got an offer on the 24" stainless octagonal that I'd be an idiot to refuse. If I decide it's too similar to the 24" Uberti I might hunt up a 16" barrel for it. I've only put my own cast bullets through it so far but have a broad selection of bullets for testing.

Sorry I'm late to the party. I built a BSA Martini in .357 magnum, its an accurate little rifle. I was lucky enough to take my first deer with it only last week, having finished the build only days prior. Its a 1909 chassis with a Rossi Puma 92 barrel that was re-threaded to suit the Martini action. It has a 2x20 long eye relief pistol scope.

I believe it is still a very versatile round, even now days with all the other calibers available. There is no over penetration and no excessive damage to meat.

This rifle and this caliber is one I will keep and one day hand down to my children!

I have a novelty 'range toy' rifle in the form of the stainless Ruger M77/357 bolt action carbine with a zombie green/grey Boyds stock, it's quite the head turner, it has a 5 round rotary magazine but works really well with the local SSAA single load rule.

Accuracy out to 100m is excellent with 38 special rounds but 357 magnums seem to be all over the place with every brand I've tried, glass bedding the stock helped a little but now I've started reloading I can develop something that works well and still hits hard.

357 Magnum is a great all round caliber and fun in pistol and rifle but still low cost.

I am still considering throwing the bolt shut on two lever guns, a 45-70 and a 357mag, uncle is getting to be pretty old n tired and he has both but in guns I am not interested in, however his vast amount of reloading gear and ammo that he hasnt used in years is calling my name.
