Swede shooters

Post by Cal-ApeR » 27 Sep 2019, 8:18 pm

Evening,

Looking for feedback on PPU 139GR factory ammo. Specifically how it performs on game?

Many thanks

PPU is very good ammo, I mainly use the FMJ for target shooting but have used the SP and note no difference out to 300m. For hunting the 139 SP works very well on pigs and fallow but is too small here in Vic for any other deer species. Used extensively in Europe for all game species.Cheers.

Thanks mate, just what I was after. Was a little concerned the factory stuff would be too slow compared to what's achievable with reloads. At the end of the day, I guess it's still packing a lot of energy regardless of modern / old action loads.

You would be leaving some speed on the table. Swede shooters should reload or get themselves a 260 instead.

Agree. It's more that the factory ammo is cheaper than the brass alone Would be good to use it for a purpose rather than just blasting down range. Once I've got the brass I'll focus on reloading.

I bought a couple of boxes recently to run in a Mauser M18 swede and I was a little dissapointed by the lack of accuracy from the PPU, you may get a different result in ur rifle.

Speed was mid 2500's so plenty of knock down power for hunting.

You're a lucky man. I suppose the Mauser M18 and Sauer 100 are very similar. I picked it up used but unfired from the local store for$749. Included Leupold bases, so pretty happy. I do like the butt plate on the M18 though.

Yeah I saw a few Sauers in 6.5 swede advertised at fantastic prices but I reallly wanted the Mauser. Magazine is really good double stack, soft touch rubber inserts bloody good in the stock and 5 moa guarantee, sub 900, hard to refuse

reloads give me 2810 fps with 140 sst's , 2950fps with 120 nosler bt's . re22 powder in both , awsome accuracy . the poor old swede comes alive with handloads . ppu is great brass . i bin buying 8x57 175 gn ppu for $27 for 20 . just started to reload it , and yeah , big improvement in accuracy

I picked up 5 boxes of PPU 140gn SP for my 1899 Carl Gustav Mod96 Swede, as it was a cheaper than virgin brass!
Through my old Swede this ammo put 5rds into 1.2" @100M & 2.8" @200M. Can't complain about that!

As far as hunting goes I'd say this 140SP will work very well.

That’s pretty good, I’ve never had PPU group really well for me, but it’s nice brass for reloads

Yeah I use it in the 223 and 270 I squeeze a bit more accuracy with my handloads but yeah, theyre pretty good for a cheap round. I have only had to throw out a couple rounds of PPU brass out of about 1000 rounds. so its good stuff

Must admit I was blown away by the results from the old Mod96 & PPU ammo.
I run some thru my1942 Mod38 Husky & got similar results.
I've since reloaded those cases with Speer 140gn pills over AR2209.
