Bluing vs Cerakote for a vintage rifle?

Hi as many of you know I am rebuilding my grandfather's Winchester Model 60a .22, I took it out last weekend after getting all the parts(except for the stock) and putting it back together and put a few rounds through it thanks especially to bentaz for the sight ramp, nearly all of the bluing is gone with some minor pitting of the barrel and I'm wondering about whether I re-blue the barrel or get a midnight-blue cerakote on it instead? just wanting opinions and past experiences especially if someone has used cerakote with a wood stock?

Personally I'd reblue the gun, If you have the $$$$ (like a warlord) cold gold plate it haha

Yeah Blueing when done looks awsome but I saw this and though it looked pretty good and would last alot longer than bluing as I do plan on using this gun for many years to come? how hard is it to get a nice deep blue DIY or would I also have to send that off to a gunsmith as i would with cerakote?

That blue is very nice for cerakote, and DIY is from what I’ve seen pretty easy, I’m looking to cerakote the 464 SPX im getting with a a nice FDE and from what I’ve been able to find the DIY cans are pretty easy to use, Duracoat is another option and looks pretty good

It's a tough one. Bluing would hold more appeal as it is in keeping with the original but if you are happy with the cerekote colour and plan to keep the gun on the family then I see nothing wrong with that either. It might even add to the story of the gun, like you putting your stamp on it. As you say, it should outlast the bluing if it intended to be a working gun.

What ever you decide, I would go with s professional job. It would be a shame to stuff up for first attempt on a sentimental keep sake. It you really want to try DYI, get some old clunker for $50 and try it on that first.

looked after the bluing will last your life time as well. I must admit you do have to be careful with what bluing comes in contact with though. I would personally go the bluing if it is an antique the modern stuff will devalue it also can you ever go back if you change your mind?

I'm not worried about devaluation as I'm never going to sell it as it was my great grandfathers and my grandfathers and now mine, In terms of removing the cerakote in the future if I were to change my mind and want to blue it that would be a question I would have to ask you guys or maybe the gunsmith

I'm a big cerakote fan myself owning 3 cerakoted actions, if theres blemishes on the rifle personally id cerakote and not worry about it,if it's in good nick id probably go a re blue if you think its worth it, my cerakote guys pretty reasonable too, which in the end may sway you to one side or the other

I think bluing too,but sometimes there is an issue because of consistency In metal.
I know cerakote is great but duracoat is very underrated and is easy.
With the right preparation it looks great and is cheaper.
Have had some old hunting rifles duracoated myself and had no issues or problems for years.
Only because i couldn't get the right consistency with bluing.

LGS will have touch up kits easy to use too most times blends right in I think you can get it in pen type too never tryed them tho .
I use this stuff Perma Blue 3oz Liquid by Birchwood Casey look on evilbay

just a different way of re blueing pvc pipe with caps you can even leave it in a corner of the shed
