Yeah they are good for their price-point. Barrels seem as decent as any mid-range rifle I reckon.

Since we're on the subject of Ruger admiration SHV - here's my (now fairly modified) blackout Ranch on the 200m line today:

I really do like that little gun/cartridge/scope combo; it (now) runs bloody well and is very comfortable to shoot from the elbows. And 50c a shot for 30cal!

I like the little 300 blackout too, how accurate at 200 meters? bullet drop how far compares 50/100m?

With the load I've settled on, it's about 4 minutes (8") of drop from a 100m zero. Under typical Sydney coastal winds (10-20km/h), at 200m it's definitely not a 1 minute (2") gun, no more like a 2 minute (4") gun. However variance is mostly on the vertical, indicating inconsistent muzzle velocities, which matches my findings when I chronoed my loads.

Standard deviation is up around 20-30fps. But it's harder to achieve consistent velocities with a very fast powder like AR2205 (which the blk requires). Plus it has a long throat, so you're jumping the short rounds a fair way, which probably doesn't help with ignition.

But from field positional, ATM I'm not shooting much better than 2 minutes, so this gun is more accurate than I. And that's how I measure the effectiveness of a gun+cartridge.

There is a lot to like about this combo. :drinks:

my Ruger ranch 556 drops about 7 inch at 250 yard (230m) the wind blows 5 shot apart around 4 inches (about 1.6MOA) but vertically not too bad, around 0.6MOA

Yeah its the short barrel on em - that lost velocity really hurts when there's a fluctuating crosswind  and the blackout is even more susceptible. All said and done, the 223 is an inherently more accurate round; for target shooting it's a bit of a no-brainer. I just like the novelty factor of the blk right now - i'll come crawling back to the fast 22cal in due time, perhaps once my 1:8 .224 Swan barrel finally arrives... :D

I shoot a lot of pest birds here on our homestead orchard. there are a group of trees about 145m away that they consistently go land in when you start laying them to waste, my little Ruger American with the short barrel can despatch them without any effort out at that distance, every shot with either CCI or Federal ammo. I love rugers.

Infact I would go as far as saying that rugers are the only plastic stock rifles I would ever own.
