Cz527 recoil lug? Boyd’s stock?

Post by Cooper » 25 Nov 2019, 10:26 am

Hi all

Over the weekend I decided I might put my CZ 527 MTR into a Boyd’s stock that I had bought.

The inletting of the Boyd’s stock looks correct (other than recoil lug section?)

Also the CZ 527 is the MTR VERSION (Match
Target Rifle) not sure if that makes a difference?

The factory MTR stock has what looks like a plastic insert in the recoil lug section (appears glued in) whereas the Boyd’s has a more traditional looking recoil lug relief that looks like it was suit a Howa or Remington 700.

Looks like a need a recoil lug or spacer made to make the Boyd’s work. I’d rather leave the MTR Stock standard.

I’ll include a picture of the two stocks. Probably should have taken a picture of the action. Hopefully someone here has come across the problem before.

cooper they look different to me me
the bolt hole locations are different as is the mag well and the recoil lug area
the boyds looks like for a longer action
a pic of your action would probably show why the recoil lug area is different

Sorry Marksman I posted a shocking photo. I’m holding the Boyd’s stock higher than the factory stock... above a glass table.

The stock seems to fit other being sloppy around the recoil lug location.

Yes. But I should have taken a photo of the CZ527 action and recoil lug bit. It looks tiny and seems to use the plastic? Insert that has remained in the MTR stock. As the recoil lug.

I post some more pictures

What is that bit just behind the lug hole in the MTR stock? They do look different but everything in front of the recoil lug doesn't matter. The Boyds will probably benefit from bedding. Its really hard to pick up the 3D depths to see what is really going on.

Yeah the bit in the MTR recoil lug hole is a plastic bit that appears to be glued in. Yeah you probably need to see it. I will try to post some better pics.

I have two CZ MTR’s now this is my 222 one. I don’t remember seeing the same set up in my 6.5 Grendel MTR when I had it out of the stock. Further investigation is required.

Thanks

My thoughts too. But I thought these stocks were a precise fit - maybe not.

What is on the underside of the action. Is it something like a Tikka? I cant remember what the recoil arrangement is on my Sako I haven't had it out of the stock much but I think it is not just a standard recoil lug.

nothing is a precise fit unless hand fitted and these companies cannot do it in the price
l am having difficulty working out the plastic recoil lug unless it is similar to the tika recoil tab :unknown:
its not necessary for this rifle when bedded if your action looks like this

Image

if your action resembles this one l can see how the tab would fit behind the recoil lug on the rifle

Image

IMHO bedding the recoil lug area would benefit the rifle and you would get the most out of it :drinks:

edit: on the computer looking at the photo's l can see the actions are the same

The recoil lug section on my action looks less pronounced and has machining behind it. To suit the plastic spacer. Kind of reminds a bit of the Tikka style setup.

Curiosity got the better of me. I didn’t remember seeing the same plastic spacer setup in my 6.5 Grendel MTR. Action looks the same. No plastic spacer in the stock.

my thought is that the plastic spacer will fail sooner or later like the tikka ally tabs do, the tabs are better off glued into place or bedded into place
it sort of is backward thinking as you would normally have the recoil lug attached to the action :unknown: but the system works
the tabs need to be relieved on the front side as well, that also being backward as normally you would relieve the rear on a normal lug setup
just put one slice of tape on the front of the tab where it goes into the slot in the action to relive it when you glue it back into place
so when glueing it back relieve the tab, it should stick in the slot and seat the action into the stock that has the glue where the tab fits
they have a recoil lug on the action l just dont get why they would want to put a recoil tab there as well :unknown:
you may be able to make a tab out of some stainless lMO it would be better than the plastic but l do think it would be easier to just bed it :drinks:
