What Rifle Safe should I buy?

Post by TheFirearmEnthusiast » 30 Nov 2019, 6:49 am

Hey guys,

I hope youse are well

I live in Victoria

And I need to buy a rifle safe

Here are my requirements;
1) I wanna have a digital safe
(Where you punch in a pin code to unlock & open the safe)
2) I don't wanna spend too too much
(If at all possible, coz I've seen safes that are ridiculously expensive & I've seen safes that are way more affordable, so I wanna spend a conservative amount if possible)
3) I want the safe to be able to keep approximately 15x firearms in there
(Anywhere between 12x to 15x firearms is cool as I plan to collect a bit of everything down the track etc)
4) Not too bulky would be good also
(I've seen safes that can hold 7x rifles, others that can hold 12x rifles, yet both safes had more or less the same exterior dimensions. So I believe it is perhaps possible to get one that's not too bulky also?)

What safe specifically would you guys recommend?
And where should I buy it?

* The brand doesn't really phase me, as long as it's decent-ish quality, does the job well, kinda stirdy, thats cool I don't have a problem

Thanks Folks

:-)

The capacity advertised on safes is a lie, unless you only have single barrel shotguns.

#4 - Refer to the above. Any safe that fits 15 real guns is going to be large.

I have "20 rifle" safes, and while it is technically possible to cram sixteen or seventeen milsurp rifles into one, access requires pulling virtually all of them out to get the one you want. With scoped rifles I doubt I'd fit ten in there, and that would be really pushing it. One advantage of the bigger safes is that the bolt box in the top is big enough to hold several take-down rifles and guns, including my Norinco JW21 lever-action .22LR, despite its 20" barrel.

I like the efficiency of an electronic safe, but they're generally "locked" by a simple solenoid blocking the movement of the locking bars. A large magnet will move the solenoid very easily, probably as quickly as you can key in a code. Stick with keys, or use a security system as well.

CMI make excellent gun safes, price wise you get what you pay for.

I Will take everything into consideration
:-)

And in terms of:
"Digital Locking System v/s Standard Key Locking System"

Which one would you guys recommend?
What are the pros and cons etc?

Neither is particularly secure, but I would favour keys over digital, takes a bit more effort to get into it. Digital is faster and you don't need to have keys, but I wouldn't rely on it without a security system.

Mm
I do live in a pretty safe area/community
I do have an alarm system
I do have security doors at the front and back of my house

I'm thinking of going digital maybe for how convenient it is
I love the idea of not needing keys
I've got so many keys already lol

Just don't forget where the keys are, the batteries will go flat eventually :-)

I’ve got a spika 20 gun safe, as mentioned above fits less than that it’s also digital and honestly I would not go back to a key safe it’s just so convenient.

Yeah 8x57

I'm extremely tempted to getta digital safe

Sounds so easy and convenient and frankly safer

I mean like;
Anyone could open up your safe if they just find your keys
(So that's not incredibly safe)

Digital sounds safer
In the sense that;
Nobody can open your safe unless they know your pin code
Which I never plan to tell anyone my pin code so
Nobody will ever know my code so

Definetely sounds safer to me

As long as you change the code to use all the keys regularly. Otherwise just wear will quickly show what 4 numbers are being used. Also not hard to spray some finger print like talke to see what the numbers are. I prefer a key.

I met a guy here that lost two handguns because a guy he knew happened to find his keys one day. He "visited" when he knew the guy was at work, stole the guns, and replaced the keys. It wasn't until he went to do his next shoot that he discovered the guns missing. Luckily it didn't take long to work out who the thief was.

You don't need to know the code to get into the safe, keys are safer - mine stay attached to my belt 24/7.

that's the size safe i shoulda bought :roll: i got the spika key operated 12 gun safe , it fits 8 comfortably and i bolted the 3A safe to the top of it (same 520mm width ) to store ammo/powder/primers . i hide my keys VERY well , as someone else posted, wear on the digital keypad is a give-away to the code

Bit of a movie myth really.

People won't know how many numbers are actually needed for the code. Mine has more than 4 numbers for my code. If someone sees the wear, how would they know the code?
eg: 1234, 4321, 1243, 1342, 1324, 11234, 111234, 111234, 1111234 etc

If you're only using 4 numbers and its a simple sequential code then it's gonna be easy, just like if you leave the key in plain sight.

I've got a digital combo and I'm not really worried. If they go through the effort to break my code then they would go through the effort to get into the safe some other way, even though it's got massively thick walls and bolted down and is over 200kg empty.

I opted for the Spika S3, 12 Gun. It is keyed rather than digital but was quite impressed with the quality of it (I'm a fabricator), the floor panel is a little flimsy but if you're bolting it/fixing it through the back wall as well as the base, it's fine.

On the overall I imagine I'm going to fill it very quickly given the storage number is based on un-scoped rifles, but for the price I'm very happy with it.

I'm looking to do the same as Bigrich has done and bolt the S3A to the top of it, I also have plenty of room to mount another S3 or S4 along side it when required, haha.

It really comes down to your budget restrictions. Moving into large safe territory can get expensive quickly.

BR, is it really a good idea to have your ammo, powder and primers locked in a (presumably) totally enclosed safe?
The usual recommendation w.r.t powder and primers is that they should be in a receptacle of stout construction and suitably vented to prevent the container being a proverbial bomb.

Wooden cupboard or table for powder/ primers... or keep them separate ideally

I should store my primers separately, I think I will make that change. Of all the components they are certainly the most hazardous at least in terms of ignition. Once made into ammo the clearance between one and the next is much larger and the storage probably better in ways.

in the smaller gun safes the internal storage safe is next to bloody useless - far too small and just takes up room. Go big!

Definitely, my "20-rifle" safes have a big enough bolt box in the top to store several rifles broken down.

Costco sometimes have the winchester digital safes in at a reasonable price, it beeps before the battery runs out so you can replace it. It also is fire resistant and you can configure the inside to hold smaller safes etc. Agree with above if it says 10 gun read 5 really!!

Just to let everyone know
I ended up going with the Spika S3D safe
I'm pretty happy with it
It does the job just fine
Cost me $700
Not too bad
I'll probably buy a 2nd one down the track if I need more room for firearms
(Which I probably will)

I got a spika double door. One side for ammo and one side for guns. Can't wait to load her up.

Jt-2019;
The Red Shield safes do look good, I agree
But from memory they’re only available in Queensland from what I understand?
I might be wrong but I think I read that somewhere
:)

StraightWhiteMale;
That safe looks bloody good bro
Can’t go wrong with that!
