Stock stiffener??

Post by FreeO8 » 08 Jan 2020, 8:22 am

G’day, I have ordered a rifle with the infamous Hogue pillar bedded over mould stock. I’m researching ways to improve the fore end for bench rest. Has anyone here tried any of the fibreglass compounds used for auto repair? Like the stuff you would find at Supercheap auto? Looking for cheap alternatives to JB weld. Cheers

I used epoxy filler from Whitworths boat shop on Hogue and it worked well. Costs about $30

The stock is still going to move around on your front rest. You can bolt this to your existing stock to make it ride the front bag better.

 I’ll take a gander. Might be good on my other rifles too.

Not to find fault with that recommendation but one of my rimfires moved round a lot on the front rest and it was improved heaps when a "plate" or slab of wood, was screwed to the underside of the fore end. Lots of mucking round but Cheeeeeeeap :D

the auto fibreglass filler that you are talking about is what l have used in the past but you would be better lMO with a timber stock that's bedded
you can get howa sporters for $239, if that is what you have
even after filling and stabilizing the forend there is still movement especially in the wrist that is not good for precision

With a timber stock you can stiffen it with epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth, E glass is the cheapest S glass is better and carbon fibre would be best.

S glass would be see through for those who like to look at the grain of timber

The other benefit is you can seal the wood to make it waterproof which means the timber will not expand and contract with humidity. You really should use epoxy resin with wood avoid polyester.

Carbon fibre would be cheap in the small amount required this company would probably even send small amounts in the mail.
