7.62 x 51 primer issues

Post by Faedy » 16 Jan 2020, 11:43 pm

Hey
I recently bought a heap of Federal Premium 7.62 x 51 (.308) with 175gn Sierra match king proj.
Shot off a heap last weekend and went to reload tonight but primers dont want to go in. well I forced one and crushed it
They definitely aren't running small primers.
No crimp like marks either
ideas?

Crimped primers, chamfer the pockets.

The likelihood is that there is a slight misalignment of the case in the shellholder when you experience this kind of difficulty.
It will help if you have a little bit of "feel" when you start the primer insertion and a turning or jiggling the case helps.
A slight chamfer on the primer pocket opening will also help.

If it's Federal .223 or .308 it will be crimped.

That sounds correct to me.

Yeah Federal cases will be crimped. Won’t have stake marks around primer like some other cases. Just a circle indentation around primer. I thought Federal cases also had a blue (maybe red) sealant around primer.

Yep, must have been a discrete crimp.
Little bit of chamfering work around leading edge with a 5.5mm drill bit had it sorted in no time.

You can also buy a tool that fits in your press that will swage out the crimp. It's easier than fooling with a drill bit.

I had a thousand military cases to do.

I have the same ammo. You can either chamfer the primer pocket rim or preferably uniform the pocket with a reamer. Fantastic ammo in my Howa .308W.

While not 7.62, I picked up (free) approx 15Kg of federal 9mm cases that had, after closer examination, been crimped with an identifiable ring crimp, that defied all attempts to reprime.

I borrowed a decripming die from a mate and gradually worked my way through it, and distributed to those who wanted it through the club. But such PITA after I thought that I had struck such a master stroke.
