Newbie questions for VIC shooting

Post by Monolith » 15 Feb 2020, 1:11 pm

Hi all, new member here. I'm applying for a cat A/B licence soon and I read on here that you should lodge a PTA at the same time, just wanted to know how that works now that the licence application is all online? My other question is, is there anywhere to shoot centrefire in Melbourne or close to? I'm a member of the SSAA but the closest centrefire range seems to be the one in Little River and that's a pretty long drive from me. Cheers

Hey buddy, welcome

Yes, I would definitely submit my PTA at the same time as my application.
(That will save you 1x month of extra wait time)

From what I understand, you can download the PTA form online from the Victoria Police web site.
Once you download the PTA form, print it off.
Then, take the PTA form directly to your gun store and get them to fill it out for you.
Once the PTA form is fully filled out by your gun store, when you go to send off your physical final application (in hard copy) in the mail, simply attach your PTA form all filled out at the back of your application and then post everything together in the mail in the one go.

That's it

G'day Monolith,
Eagle Park is the only SSAA c/f range for Melbourne, if you are north of the city there is a range at Cobaw near Lancefield but east there is only Buchan or Bonang. You can set up a target for sighting in a State Forest (don't put it on a tree!) or on Crown Land but there are some restrictions to adhere, Cheers.

Thank you for the replies and clarification, the whole PTA system is a bit confusing for someone new to it.
