I use the KG12 and it works great. Just a warning to others though if you have not read the MSDS it is pure Cyanide its not going to kill you but it is a chemical that should be given a bit more respect than other bore cleaners wash hands well after use.

Good information there Gazer, do you have the MSDS sheet for Boretech and if so, what is the active ingredient?

Mmmmm,,, just checked LESS THAN 3% Cyanide. Still, treat it with respect.

Edit, You cant generally buy that type of stuff without some sort of licence. (Dependent on concentration) Its heavily regulated.

Yes I shouldn't have used the word pure. The other ingredient is water. Im not sure if I have the Boretech MSDS I probable do as I went through the exercise of comparing them all. They were mostly all the same with very little active ingredient in them.

Just slightly off the topic.

If you just fire a couple of shots out of a rifle a month, how often do you clean?

I clean my rifle every time I take them out.

I found the MSDS sheet for Boretech Cu+. No Cyanide thank goodness.

Working in chemistry (research) area with MDSD's aplenty you would think i would look into what cleaning solvents contain what....

Cyanide (<5%) in KG12 - this made my immediately bin the stuff. Having used it sparingly in the past (without any gloves!!) - bugger me.

I think i may look to use disposable gloves from now on when cleaning rifles.

The level of cyanide in the KG12 could pose a problem with long term use - you would think the packing would alert you to use PPE of some sort.

Will stick to the Boretech gear from now on.

Sooo... just thought i would regurgitate this thread. Normally for just cleaning carbon/soot out of my centre fires I just use eds red so I bought some of this carby cleaner from Supercheap Auto last week thought id give it a crack. Turns out the bores weren't as clean as I thought. Yesterday I spent 3 hours cleaning 2 and today I'm spent about another 2 hours cleaning out another. Plenty of carbon crap material is still coming out so give this stuff ago. Seems better than eds red can't speak much about other carbon cleaners.

Use sweets for copper once a year.

P.S. I clean my rifles almost every time i use them so am assuming they were cleaned after last use.

Yep...interesting...

I bought same brand brake cleaner for same purpose.

I briefly tried to find out what the active ingredients are in carby & brake cleaner, but couldnt find anything.

Asking a few people in shops, it was suggested that brake cleaner would be better for baked on carbon, but the suggestion didnt come with any scientific backing....its just based on assuming brakes would get hotter than a carby.

I even asked a manufacturor & no one could tell me the active ingredients so i dont know which one is better for baked on carbon.

This SCA brake cleaner is no good for painted surfaces & rubber parts...so obviously cant do timber stocks any good...so being paranoid i walk out the room to spray the patch...lol

Is the carby cleaner also bad for paint & rubber OldBloke...?

Stix, both toluene and acetone disolve various plastics. So be carefull with plastic stocks and magazine followers. I suspect same with paint and rubbers. I think acetone is ok with timber.

Regarding safety. Acetone us at the low end of toxicity scale. Pls understand not all carcinogenics are equal. . Everytime you fill up with petrol you are breathing at least some benzene.

We use very small quantities. Just ensure pleny of ventilation. Eg open a couple of windows or doors when in use.

Cant speak about the other substances.

EDIT My mistake. benzene and toluene are carcinogens. Have edited the above.

Most petrochemicals are toxic or carcinogenic.

If you want ingredients, look at the MSDS of these things not the label on the bottle/can. Only food has standards that require all ingredients to be listed on the label, other things like this might or might not have all ingredients listed on the label.

Have have a look at the MSDS from nulon, for a similar product. Click on msds button.

Re: My experience with bore cleaning

I was at one of the ranges here on the weekend playing around, and a bloke beside me set up his monster, I have no idea on classes for target shooting but this thing looked one of those rail guns but he had it on a rear bag and front adjustable stand thingo, I felt inadequate with my measley 1 1/4" barrel when he had this thing that looked like half a length of 2" solid bar threaded to an action!

Anyways first thing he did was clean it, with turps, a bronze brush and patches. Could smell it was turps a mile away, I'm quite certain there would come a time he uses copper remover as i did see a bottle of sweets in his range box.

Maybe he's using that to float out the carbon AM88...
Maybe White spirits or Shellite...?
They are used a fair bit for a final clean to remove all solvent as they apparently dont leave a residue.

Anyway, interestingly, there are NO active ingredients listed on the same branded can of brake cleaner--aside ftom stating its a hydrocarbon propellant.

That might mean its cancer in a can...

Would be interesting to see which removes baked on carbon more effectively.

Stix i have a can of nulon air intake cleaner foaming but they don't make that anymore. Try nulon upper engine cleaner.

Usually run 2 patches and 3rd one is clean. Even boretech copper eliminator cleans the carbon reasonably well

Every few years I go to a local commercial printing place and grab 4 or 5 L of 100% Isopropyl ( they pour out from 20L drums, paid $8L last time from memory).

doesnt damage ya car paint or plastic, I was using it to remove sticker gum as I was competing on a montly basis over the last few years.

Its what they use to clean large scale presses and also a lense cleaner. Fantastic on carbon too.

Helmars 7500 is by far the best non toxic dedicated carbon remover Ive used and it even removes copper just not as quick as Boretech. Locally made and cheap too.
