220gr in .308

Post by Heathen » 26 Mar 2020, 8:17 am

Looks like I might have some spare time to play around with a few loads.
I cast 220gr for my 300 Blk but thought I might throw together a few subsonic. 308 loads using that proj.
Anyone had any luck/experience ?
Thinking bullet stability might be an issue

My 300 AAC BLK has a 1:7 twist and shoots 220 fine but subsonic it’s useless on game so I stopped useing it

To shoot a 220 grn in a 308 is really not of any benefit to the average shooter. Much better of shooting a lighter bullet. To get any benefit from the higher BC of some of the 200 grn and higher bullets you really need a 30 inch barrel and to push them so hard that the brass only lasts one maybe two firings. Also you really need a big heavy duty custom action and a big heavy barrel esp around the chamber.
To go subsonic again it would still be better to use a lighter bullet to get a 220 to stabilize at such low speeds is going to require a very high twist rate.

It would help to provide your twist and length. 1:10”?
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?
