New Addition to my Range (or I was bored)

Post by Eduardo » 17 Jun 2014, 12:14 pm

I finished work early and couldn't go hiking as planned so I did this instead. A small addition to my shooting range,

How do the clays go Eduardo?

Do they all last or do they end up knocking each other off when they go?

Love it.

Hey, I said it was made for a 1,000m target.

I haven't hit the thing yet ha ha. Might need to be twice that size.

I routed out the wood very precisely so the clays fit snugly, that was actually the most time consuming part. That's not to say that if I miss a shot and hit the wood, it might still drop. But if I do my part they should stay up.

I see the routing now that you mention it :)

I'm too lazy and normally just lean the clays against something if I find a few.

More fall over than I shoot

I've got an old saw horse in the shed.

Might have to make a copy out of it this weekend after seeing this :)

Just tested it with sub sonic .22 in my back yard. Works even better than I'd hoped.

The clays fit so snugly I can shoot the same clay multiple times without them falling over, chipping away at them rather destroying them with a single shot.

Increases the need for precision to get those last bits. Should also help me save money on clays.

I might be changing the cans out for tennis balls. The bullets travel through the cans so fast it barely gives a report. You have to walk over to the cans to see if you hit them some of the time. Tennis balls should work better.

My wife seemed to enjoy it more than I did. She ended up getting more "range time" in.

Excellent idea for the clays.

The old steel cans were better to shoot than the Aluminium ones as the steel offered a little more resistance to penetration than the aluminium ones.

Best fun I had shooting cans was filling them with water and hitting them with the 1911 in 45 ACP - you really see the effect of the transfer of energy from the bullet to the water and then the can.

I think my ability to shoot in my backyard has more to do with my property than the laws. I could not do that in the last home I owned. Here's the law around this in NYS.

It is illegal to discharge a firearm, longbow or crossbow within 500 feet (for a firearm), 250 feet (for a crossbow) or 150 feet (for a longbow) of a dwelling, farm building or structure in occupation or use unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate member of the family, an employee, or have the owner's consent.

The closest home to me is owned by my Sister and even she is about 400' away. I'm more than 500' from the roadway as well. The remaining homes are roughly 800' and beyond. So, technically I could fire 308 in my backyard, but given the state of things I limit myself to .22 subsonic because I do have neighbors that might be anti-gun who might complain but it is more about being a considerate neighbor. I can just quad to my Dad's place across the street to shoot the bigger stuff.

Not all of us.

Don't know about Qld, but in NSW there are no specific limits other than discharging any firearm in a residential area, on public areas like roadways or shooting across those areas.

I shoot in my backyard, My neighbours house is 300 metres away and I have been told to stop ringing her to tell her I have a few friends arriving for a shoot or I want to let off a few dozen rounds doing load development. The statement she makes is "I'm a country girl. I know what firearms are all about. The noise doesn't worry me or the young kids." Fair enough. I was just trying to be curtious. 50-100 or more rounds in a session is a little different from the ocassional shot at a rabbit, fox or feral cat. She also works shift work so I don't know what days she might be sleeping during the day.

Another neighbour (93 year old) some 3-4 kilometres away keeps asking when I or the mates are coming down at daybreak or before to cull some rabbits from his garden in front of his house, alternative is he says to come down very late afternoon and spotlight from his front doorstep. Problem is he wants us to supply his dinner (rabbit)..... ;) ;) .... and he likes his Bourbon. Could be a rough trip home driving back through the paddocks.

Pretty good area around here, even the ex-city dwellers and their small blocks know what firearms are all about even if they can't play themselves. They don't like their garden destroyed or their chooks eaten by ferals.

Let off a semi-automatic and you get comments like....by gee you must be quick loading that rifle....

My shooting / testing range is 10 metres from my front doorstep. Rural property.

No such luck here. My neighbours hours is 20 metres away. Property bang in the middle of the burbs.
