Howa 1500 sporter barrel stock questions

Post by moudzj » 16 Mar 2020, 2:58 pm

Hi,

Have two questions im hoping someone can help me out with.

For a 22" Howa 1500 sporter barrel, am looking for a replacement stock.

Interested in the
B&C
GRS Berserk.

In regards to both, I am wondering if anyone knows if these stocks retain the internal magazine? Am hoping to keep it. Struggling to find consistent info online, though especially for the GRS stock.

Also, are both of these compatible with the 22" sporter barrel? Or is there variations that are/arent?

Thanks heaps...

MJ.

Internal magazine? Or floor plate setup.

I run a GRS Berserk stock with the standard floor plate arrangement. You won’t have barrel clearance issues with a sporter barrel.

Thanks for the reply cooper.

Stock floor plate, nice to know that you are running this with no issues. Definitely interested in keeping this.

Although i wont have barrel clearance issues, would there be any issues with the increased gap because of the slimmer barrel? Just found out that they are indeed only made for the varmint fat barrel. Thanks

Should shoot pretty well with the GRS, they are chunky but well designed. No bedding required.

What about a chassis kit like mdt or similar? I did my first build up with a howa barrel/action recently, couldn’t be happier or more impressed with results. .

Tassie,

I dont want to lose the internal mag, and will be doing alot of off the shoulder shooting hunting, so want to keep it as light as possible too.

GRS stock is really nice, but im not keen on how the increased gap because of the slimmer barrel will look.

So will most likely be the B&C for me, or, the Hogue with full bedding block.

Im not sure on the houge - mine was moving around when it was hot outside. Not a lot, but enough to raise an element of doubt.

For a hunting rifle with the sporter barrel the hogue stock with the pillar bedding is satisfactory - and you could even stiffen up the fore-end with some glass epoxy . The Hogue stock with the full-length bedding block is much heavier than the pillar version.
I did have a HS Precision stock on a Howa LA sporter in 30-06 and this outfit with a scope weighed around 4.2 kgs - so without a scope i dare say 3.5-3.6 kgs. Highly recommend that HS Precision stock.

Have you had a look at which of the B&C stocks fit the sporter barrel without that bigger gap? I'm in exactly the same boat, looking for a better stock for my .223. It looks like only one or two options are made for the sporter barrel (the 6509 is the Short Action one, there's a Long and a Youth that are the same). Have you seen anything else? Doesn't look like anything with an adjustable cheek pad, or with two sling studs?
I guess if that's the only option that's probably what I'll end up getting, just disappointing that there aren't more options I guess.

There are a ton of options out there, you could get Hatchers stocks to make you something.

Would one of these stocks work for you?
