Mauser M18 vs Sauer 100

Post by Cal-ApeR » 12 Jun 2020, 7:18 pm

Looking at both rifles. One is cheaper than the other but they seem to be made in the same factory. What is the actually difference besides stock design?

Any owners able to give their review of either? Thinking 308. There is also a cerakote version of the Sauer but it seems there are reports the application is very ordinary.

Any advice on either rifle is appreciated, even better if it's in 308. Cheers

My sauer is 243 ....it’s sub moa like they said it would be. It feels right. I really like the 3 position safety which is so definite safe or not safe esp operating in the dark ... I like the fact that when I arrive back at camp after a big night I can unload the rifle in the safe position ..... bolt never drags or catches when dirty ......ammo always feeds, no hang ups First poly mag I have ever owned. I like it. Locks in place properly ......it’s at home in the field and can be depended upon to drop whatever I point it at

Mauser M18 is about 100gr lighter than the Sauer 100, pretty much the same rifle.

Barrels n action come off the same production line. Magazines the same double stack. trigger guard is part of the stock with the M18.

thats about it

I almost bought the M18 - but then I found out that Bill has one and thoughT screw that then!!!!. But seriously - thing that pointed me to Sauer in the very end, was the m18 plastic trigger - means very little to many, but in my op, I just think that’s not an area to cut $$$.
All my previous investigations said both were guaranteed accurate, smooth actions, light weight and well made for price point.
I’ve done various triggers on my other rifles, inc tikka - I am not touching the trigger on the sauer.
I’m very happy with my sauer.

I can speak for the Sauer 100XT.
Sub moa out of the box, mines in .223, loves Hornady TAP 60 grain. Nice looking. Yes the cerakote is ordinary, iv got a bit of discoloration in some spots, nothing to bad. Having some feeding issues which I'm working through, here's a link to the thread

Trigger is plastic or the guard is plastic? I wouldn't want a plastic trigger.....

Harry, has the cerakote peeled at all? How is it at the muzzle?

trigger guard is some sort of Polymer, pretty bloody tough. Its the ultra light rifle out of the Mauser/Sauer factory.

I paid only $865 for my 6.5x55 M18, only one in the country I believe  all the features I wanted at a great price :drinks:

I really like the mauser and am leaning toward it. I want something that will last but I have limited funds. I don't want to have to change stocks etc so these two are my choices. I was unaware of the plastic trigger. Hmmmm.

Bill, how does the trigger blade feel? Did it feel strong like the trigger guard? Also, what size groups can your M18 shoot? Any sample targets?

Trigger is fantastic mate, very minimal movement and very consistent.

Plenty of online reviews, 5 shot moa accuracy, great trigger and flush 5 shot mag. If you like timber go a Sauer otherwise go handle a M18, not everyones cup of tea but I like mine. Ive done limited reloading but it easily went sub MOA with my crap hand press.

trigger is Polymer, no idea what the sear is, might just pull it apart, either way its a very nice crisp break.

Harry that flaking you have isn’t normal from what I’ve seen - you sure you haven’t left a corrosive on there?

There is very little difference between the two.
The polymer trigger is neither here nor there but it annoys bill when I bring it up lol.
The extra weight of the sauer is reportedly from additional reinforcement of the stock.
My 30:06 is amazingly accurate .5 moa with 168gns BUT the barrel was a bitch to run in - coppering up for the first hundred plus rounds - it never effected accuracy but was annoying as hell. It’s settled now and is my go to deer stalker.

Tassie tiger
It happened fairly early in the peice, the chipping that is...and when it comes to bore cleaners, iv used hoppes 9 and hoppes copper anti foul, not very corrosive from what iv gathered.

I've got a Sauer XT .308 and am very happy with it. Sub moa, handles well even though the stock is longer than my other rifles, I actually shoot really well off hand with it. Like the double stack mag and it came with a spare. Trigger is nice. Safety very nice. I have one issue with some binding of rounds when cycling the action, but this only happens if you work the action slowly while pointing the rifle upwards.

I have the Sauer 100 Classic in Timber, it's an awesome rifle and very well made. I would highly recommend it. Sauer have been making firearms since 1751, they know what they are doing.
