Hi

My father passed this Beretta shot gun onto me back in the 90's.I would appreciate if someone could tell me more about it, I think it is a 1960's manufacture.

It is as written under the action a Beretta monobloc. I think it may have been replaced by the Silver Hawk in the early 60's. Contact Beretta Australia with the serial number and they will be able to tell you when it was made.

G'day tlia7,
Your gun looks very much like a Model 409, having the square back boxlock. To date it, and any other information, we would need to see the marks stamped on he barrel flats and action flats. Cheers.

With Beretta SXS, the actual model number is generally stamped into the fore-end wood, in one of the barrel channels.
Definitely not a base model gun, in any case. Does it have extractors or ejectors?

As No1Mk3 says, if you can provide clear pics of the various proofmarks, it's quite easy to determine the year it was made, and a lot of other info.

Or if you want to have a crack at that, this is a truly excellent online shotgun proofmark reference site; http://www.shotguns.se/html/proofmarks.html

Tia7

Let us know what you find out model wise. I reckon my old man has one and I would be interested to know the model.

Cheers

You may wonder why the letter sequence is not logical. The reason is that the Italian language does not use the full alphabet – J,K,W,X and Y are not used in Italian words. The letter O is missed out because of a possible confusion with zero, while Q also leads to confusion when stamped very small.
Roman numeral series

CF=2010, CH=2011, CI=2012, CL=2013, CM=2014.
Incidentally, the 2 letter date stamp applies to all Italian guns.

Well tlia7,

The last post by pomemax makes it clear that not only is that gun old, it will be costly to dispose of due to a clear long history of contact with lead and other dangerous contaminants.

I will make you a deal and take it off you hands for free.

Bahaha.

Seriously, I can't offer any conclusive advice. I can however observe that the engraving looks like it was done by the same craftsman (or tool) as my 1980 Beretta 680 special skeet.

Can you find the two letter date code? I would be interested in knowing what year that magnificent piece of work was made.
Regards,

Jarhead

Hi all thanks for your feedback, I have taken more pictures and so far can confirm it is a model 409 and has all the appropriate smokeless proof marks.I can see what looks like a GB stamped and the number 12. but not sure if the GB is the date code as it is not on the list.

tlia7,

The year of manufacture looks to be 1954.

The proof marks are post 1951 and the giveaway is the "X." It is easy to miss as few years marks are single digit.

Here is a similar Beretta from 1976 with an "AB" stamp in the same spot.......

What type of barrel steel is written on the barrels? A 409 will be "AUSONIA" a 410 will have "Titania"

A redundant question, perhaps?
Shown in one of the photos above, the number '409' can clearly be seen, stamped into the stock wood.

possible but anyone who may search for what model gun they have may find the information of some use. I've seen a lot of Beretta sxs's over the years not all have the model number stamped on the fore end
