What do you use for home ammo storage?

Post by djmm » 18 Jan 2021, 7:56 am

What do you guys use to store ammo at home? I understand that we can use simple storage like cash box/ammo crate etc but I don't want to deal with padlocks and I find safes looks better and offer more safety in general.

Hi Mate
As my collection out grew my safes, the out grown safe became the new storage depot for ammo.
I made some home made shelves for it and, bobs your uncle.

Its starting to get a bit crowded in there now.
I think it may be time for a new bigger safe.
I am going to put my protective armour on and talk to the minister for war and finance about a new bigger safe.
If you don't hear from me again, it was nice knowing you

I use the same storage box that I take away with me. Box is locked and away in a cupboard.

A stack of double-padlocked MTM ammo crates. I bought forty keyed-alike padlocks so I only need one key.

I got one of these when i outgrew the interior compartment.

Good size, with two moveable shelves. Could add in an extra if needed. I will say though uses a standard size safe key. I would personally prefer a combo set up so not lugging another key.

Got mine for a bit over $200 from memory, so better value than a Bunning's safe and far more room.

I kept my old CMI pistol safe and ended up using that to store my ammo. Glad I didn't sell it.

I use
https://www.aussiedisposals.com.au/trac ... 0-cal.html
I drill a 8 mm hole center of lock down flap then fit a 8 mm Stainless eye-bolt ,2 nuts and large plate washer so it can not be pulled through but swivel so I can fit padlock 1 for each cal I have . and bought 20 locks keyed alike so 1 key on ring .
Done the same with trigger locks bought 24 from US keyed alike so only 2 keys on mine and Mrs key-rings
I know i dont need the trigger locks but when they are not in use they are on saves forgetting to fit one for transport .

Unfortunately due to limited storage space, maximum safe size I could use is around 30x30x25 one, probably won't be able to bulk buy ammos...

Old fridges with hasp and staples and padlocks (keyed alike). A $2 disposable dehumidifier in each one and your uncle is definitely named Bob.

I use red lockable tool boxes for each calibre (2 for some that I store larger quantities of), these are then stored in a lockable 2 door steel office cupboard approx 1.3M W, 2.0MH and 0.50 D. However with the exception of 223R and 300BO, these are all pistol rnds/calibres.

I was advised that here in NSW we are not allowed to use hardwood/any sort of wood material for storage anymore. I wish we still could at least use hardwood, that would make it so much easier to custom make one (and yet still solid and safe).
A bit weird that a cashbox is allowed (which thieves can just pick up and leave) but a wooden cabinet is not when it is obviously much harder to carry away.

I converted an old power factor correction unit that got replaced at work. Its a heavy gauge metal cupboard 2m tall 400mx 400m square. I put a few shelves in it.

That's nice. I was considering metal electrical enclosure too but the locks on those enclosure looks very flimsy and easily breached so I decided to use safe instead.

From a purely safety point of view, a light weight wooden box is the safest. In particular for primers and powder. Next best would be a very light weight metal box that's designed to open/vent in the case of an ignition. But obviously not great for security.

P.S. Once assembled the ammo is pretty safe.

Lockable steel cabinet from bunnings, originally was using the ammo boxes in the top of the safes, but became increasingly annoying to access everything without pulling the rest out.

I was going to convert my original safe into a shelved cabinet, but ended up rejigging the whole lot and flogging the safe off, still yet to find the ultimate solution

Just wondering who gave you that "advice"? The bloke trying to sell you a safe?

A quick search found this in a NSW Firearms Registry Notification.

The Commissioner of Police has determined the following as the
minimum standard applicable to the ammunition storage container and
locking mechanisms for a licence or permit holder:
The ammunition container must be made of plastic, wood, metal or steel which
is sturdy and not easily penetrated (ie cash box/ammunition box) and be fitted
with a lock which is either:
1. An internal locking mechanism (ie cash box or similar) which is operated
by means of a key, combination lock or other similar locking mechanism
(ie pin number), OR
2. Locked by the use of a hasp and staple (or similar) and fitted with a
padlock.
NOTE: The key to the lock/padlock must not be kept within the firearms
receptacle, or within the immediate vicinity.
Police have the authority to seize firearms and ammunition under section 42
of the Act if they have reasonable cause to believe the firearms or ammunition
are not being kept in accordance with Part 4 of the Act.
The Commissioner has not evaluated or approved any individual receptacles
for safe storage of ammunition. However, any receptacle or lock meeting or
exceeding the features described herein is approved for the purposes of
sections 40(1)(d) & 41(1)(c) of the Act.

We used to be able to store longarms in a gun cupboard made of solid timber but that was changed some time ago. Perhaps that is where this stems from?

Double door steel locker, picked up from a local school via Gumtree for $80.00.
Interesting point made by the young lady I dealt with is that document lockers are becoming scarcer as folks move to digital storage.
