What scope is on your 22LR?

Post by Dogga85 » 22 Feb 2021, 6:58 pm

Hey guys,

Trying to decide on a scope for a 22LR Tikka T1X MTR 20" barrel. I think I've narrowed it down to the Vortex range, but there's so many models and I'm stumped on a magnification....! Mainly for plinking around a large rural property and some range shooting at 100m

I’ve got a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40 on my Ruger 22 mag, highly recommended. Leupold 3-9x40 on my Savage 22, good scope as well, not necessarily any better than the Vortex though, in my opinion anyway.

Bushnell Custom 22, 2.5x on the Brno 2E, Nikko Sterling 4x20 on the Toz17, Irons on the rest but considering putting the Parker Hale 5C back on the No8.

Anschutz 54 Leupold competition 36X
CZ452 3-9x40 (only cause I had one laying around, would be happy with a fixed 4)
Marlin 39A's none (looking for a 2-7X32) for one of them.
Remington 12 none
Winchester 02 and 04 none

Magnification wise unless you are serious target shooting a 4 power will pretty well do anything you need for bunnies and it will get all the light you can use.
Plinking at 100 yards is not what I would call serious target shooting.
any 2-7 or 3-9 will cut it if you want a variable.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

Weaver T36.
Great choice of scope for shooting those little dots at 50 yards.
Good for trimming grass fronds in front of the dots as well.

Fixed 6x40 Tasco WA,
love the fine cross-hairs it has and I find the 6x just right for a .22lr from 25m to 150m
Its just a nice simple scope that doesn't leave me messing around with adjustments.

I've never felt the need for a variable scope on the .22, but it would be a different story if I wanted to plink at 300m with it.

Thanks for everyone's input. Looks like it's down to Vortex Crossfire II 3-9X40 or Leupold VX-FREEDOM 3-9X40. The Vortex price point is so attractive, but it looks like the Leupold has even more impressive eye relief over the Vortex. Comes down to whether I think it's worth the extra cost...

Or I could always go a step up to the 4-12X40 to give myself a little more headroom, should I ever need it?

When I purchased my LA101 I couldn't make up my mind as to what scope I would attach to it. Rummaged through my storage cabinet and found a S&B 6 x 42.
It was firmly affixed to said rifle and still is. I know a lot of shooters prefer variables but somehow this little item suits my style down to the ground. :D

6x40 or
3-9x40 are the go.

But I wouldn't get one with parallax adjustment again.

My last question, for those of you with the Leupold 3-9X40 scopes (VX Freedom range) , what reticle are you using? I'm not sure I'm keen on the Rimfire MOA Reticle, but the only other decent option looks like the Illuminated Firedot TRI MOA

You are lucky to be able to rummage around and come up with a S&B. The fixed power 6x is hard to beat for a hunting scope.

I always find my 22 rifles as a good platform to try out new types of optics, basically because if it turns out to be ordinary glass, it is still on a rifle that rarely is shot out past 50-100m. My CZ 515 has a cheap bushnell 6-18 rimfire scope, to mimic the set up I have on my WFA1L which has a leupold mark ar 6-18.
My CZ455 is more of a bench rifle, but is evolving into somewhat of a prs rifle, and now has a Bushnell Forge 4.5-27x50 FFP (that I still haven't had a chance to shoot with yet, only fitted it recently), but that is the 5th scope it has had on it, as that is where I experiment a bit with different brands and set ups.
Don't be afraid to try something cheap on a 22. Don't aim to by garbage, but if your not needing to see 1 inch bulls at 500m, try out some different brands.

Had a Redfield 2-7x 34 for years, which was very good, nice and compact and did a good job. It's now on my Mod 94 30-30 and is even better on that. I replaced it with a 3-9x40 which seemed a bit big at first but actually was excellent. It had a fault with the magnification ring, so now I have a 4-12x 50 on it. Again it seemed a bit large but I've got used to it, I never had the other scopes on less than 7x anyway and I never carry my rifle much further than to and from the ute.

Hi Mate
On my hunting 22 rifles I have all different brand scopes. Mostly 3-9 or 4-12.
For plinking I use a more powerful scope so I can see the holes out to 100 meters. Zeiss conquest 3-15x50
I have used fixed 4x or 6x for hunting rabbits and fox in the past for up close, with no problems.
I agree with Leupold as they have a really good warranty and can be repaired in QLD quite quickly if the worst happens.

Cheers mate. I'm still tossing up between Leupold VX Freedom 3-9X40 with Rimfire MOA reticle or 4-12X40 TRI MOA reticle

Why do you say that you wouldn't get parallax adjustment? I thought with shorter range it was more important than longer range-difference between 30 and 50 is similar to difference between 100 and 250m, or that type of thing. I thought.

Asking because I've been looking at various scopes and most scopes (bar the rimfire ones) are fixed at 100m and I thought that would make a big impact on shorter range stuff with 22

If you want fixed parallax then get a .22LR specific scope, the parallax should be set around 50yds/m.

I’ve got a Leupold 4-12x40 tri moa on my 243. It’s a pretty good scope and suits the 243 well. My thoughts would be that it would be fine on a .22 as it’s not a big bulky scope.
I’d probably opt for a duplex reticle over the tri moa on a rimfire though, simple and you probably won’t need the extra hash marks for the .22 distances you might be shooting.

PITA. For most not required. I've now just got mine set at 100 mtrs and don't touch it.

It also effects the focus.
If you buy a normal scope you don't have that issue. Except for very close everything stays in focus.

If it's an AO (adjustable objective) that really is a pain in the arse, very awkward to adjust while sighting, side-focus is very easy.
When I'm walking, or otherwise looking at potential close shots, I have the scope magnification wound right down, so I wind the parallax back to 50m or so, if I'm settled in and looking at longer shots, I wind the magnification up and set the parallax so it's focused on the potential target area.

Parallax is less important at closer distances, and critical at longer ones.
