i have recently purchased a vortex viper and was hoping someone could tell me what distance they find works for them regarding the hold over dots

It is going to depend on the calibre and the MV, weight and BC of the bullet. Do you have the specs of the reticle?

2100fps seems a bit slow? Is it a carbine?

Here's what I came up with:

For your load:

Remember, the further the target, the harder it is to estimate distance, and the harder it is to precisely "hold-over" so to speak. A small mistake might yield a complete miss. For long shots, where you potentially have more time to calculate, it makes more sense to range, strelok, then "dial-in".

I can use a 22lr BDC fairly well, but that's because it's significantly easier to guesstimate 50m/75m/100m vs say for example 230m/270m/300m (without using a ranging device).

Need to know your bullet's BC and your muzzle velocity.
And we need to know the reticle graduations.

I use 223BDC for all cartridges.

As In2anity said, 2100fps is quite low for the 6.5x55mm.

Using the subtensions he posted:
100m zero
1.5MoA=142m
4.5MoA=211m
7.5MoA=272m
11MoA=341m

I would zero at 200m (120mm high at 100m):
200m zero
1.5MoA=233m
4.5MoA=294m
7.5MoA=350m
11MoA=412m

Remember also, those holdovers only work on 20-power.
If you turn the zoom to 10-power the subtensions will double to 3MoA, 9MoA, 15MoA and 22MoA.

You seem to have lost about 800 fps somewhere.

I would dial your turrets to get on at various distances, if you cannot do that because you don't have time, then shoot at the distances you know and compare which mark corresponds to where your bullet landed. Write these down until you can memorise them.

Agreed, for precision it's always better to dial your elevation to match the range and hold dead-on.

That reticle is far more appropriate for a 140gr @ 2700fps, i.e. a factory/power 6.5cm load. 100yd=0, 200yd=1.6moa, 300yd=4moa.

Nevertheless if your rifle is indeed the venerable 6.5 x 55mm Swedish Mauser, 36gr of AR2208 under that 140gr Nosler will yield somewhere between 2500 to 2600 fps. Then just zero her at 130yds, making the first subtension match 200yds, and second subtension match 300yds. Then anything under ~150yds; just point-and-shoot!

Only practice will perfect its usage, but it should be a great hunting rifle that could really reach out there. The 6.5x55 is hugely popular in our Service Rifle club (for obvious reasons); an excellent "wind bucker" out to 300m.
