Rifle scope on a revolver

Post by Tubs » 03 Sep 2021, 9:27 pm

Anyone done it? Ive got a spare scope and it would be fun to hit the 10 ring 50 times in a row at 50m using 38 special :P

Sorry mate not going to work unless the eye relief is like 2 1/2 foot.
A rifle scope usually has about a 2" relief so you can see through it when it is about this far from your eye.
A pistol scope needs much more.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

Short focal distance optics can be used on pistols but you would have to stand using the two handed metallic silhouette field standing style where you hold the pistol with two hands in close to your face. usually one hand would be on the barrel but with revolvers the cylinder gap would be an issue.

It's actually a more stable way to hold a pistol when you have lots of aiming time and the magnification will help too, it would be even better if the scope has a graduated or etched reticle as the drop would be much easier to judge at distance.

Its a 6 inch barrel so holding the barrel is possible, but yes gases coming forward out of the cylinder might hurt a little (wear a glove?). Would probably need a bipod too to keep it stable.

G'day Tubs,
All pistol scopes are LER, I used a Hi-Lux LER 27X32 (2-7x) on an 8" barreled S&W. The NC Star boingk mentioned would work also. There are a number of LER scopes suitable for handguns. Cheers.

I am sorry if I missed something here.
I was under the impression that you had a rifle scope laying around.
Having a scoped pistol is one thing.
Fitting any old scope is another.
If you have a scope you are considering then hold out your hand as pointing the pistol. Perch your scope on top.
Can you sight through it?
If you can then great go for it.
If not then bring your hand back till you can.
When you have the distance right consider if you are comfortable firing the pistol in this stance.

BTW adding a scope will in no way mean you can hit the 10 ring at 50 yards.
The skill is knowing when to pull the trigger not being in able to place the crosshair on a target. The crosshair will be all over the place unless you are using a rest.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

Had an NC Star scope on one of my very mild recoiling rifle. Wouldn't buy another one.

Swapped it out for a Burris LER and more than happy. Should suit a revolver fine.

With my handguns, I never contemplated using a scope of any type. But as target shooting has many facets these days I can see a definite place for them.
Maybe I am old fashioned, but I will stick with sights the handgun came with. I would be interested to see what a scope on ye olde pistol would be used for.
