How far will a bullet go without a rifle?

Post by south » 18 Aug 2014, 8:34 pm

Stupid question but humour me the new guy here :D

If a rifle cartridge somehow went off by itself - heat or bad powder or something, I dunno - the brass neck must guide the bullet a little and send it forward?

How far would it go?

Say a .223 Rem for the example if we can.

My guess is that the gasses would have a path of least resistance on one side of the neck rather even if it's by a tiny bit so without a barel it would go 30m or so but the direction would be all over the place like a mad woman's s**t.

The bullet needs a barrel, the pressure on the projectile will drop to zero when it leaves the brass, how far the brass could go is anybody's guess.

Lots of vids with this subject on youtube.

Normally the case flies off the projectile, some young d**kheads I used to know would throw them into the fire on hunting trips was real funny till some one threw a 12 gauge into the fire 1/2 cut!! ! I reckon that was over 35 years ago ,I think I've finally grown up  :o
