5 gun collection if you had to

Post by mickb » 21 Jun 2022, 9:31 pm

This might cause some pain but if you were limited to just 5 firearms of any type to enjoy hunting or other tasks, what would they be? Ive left enough after a rimfire and shotgun to have 3 centrefires. ;) Feel free to ignore if you cant handle the silliness/anguish. :D

.22LR bolt-action
12ga. under/over
7mm-08 bolt-action
.44Mag lever-action
.45 muzzleloading rifle

Why would you even bother answering such a restrictive and dumb question all it proves that you're willing to capitulate

Look at it from the viewpoint of limited funds perhaps, rather than authoritarian restrictions...for now at least :-)

Yeah, I consider the minimalist collection, cull a few out of the safe that I don’t use much, then end up buying a couple more that take my fancy

22lr, I don’t really use it in the field, but it’s cheap to practice with. Not a lot of wabbits in my part of the country either
223, same as above. I use it for field rifle comps at my local range. Don’t do any culling, but since I recently got a scope mounted light I’m going to chase after foxes and cats
7-08 tikka, great all rounder. I nailed a large red deer not long ago with this and it performed well
30-06 . What can I say, reach and power
9.3x62 . If they made more projectiles around the 200-230 mark for lighter medium game I’d have this over the 30-06. That’s where the 35 whelen has a advantage over the 9.3, better projectiles choices for medium game. But the 9.3 is better suited for heavier stuff

Others in the collection at present are a late 40’s GS Holloway 12ga side by side, beautiful old engraved shotty, a martini Enfield in 303 and a 1947 Brno in 8x60s , twin triggers, spoon bolt handle, that’s awaiting a pta approval. These I own because of their collectors status and I just like them. Realistically if I substituted the 9.3 in the list above for the shotty, that would be my practical five gun list

-smallbore rifle for smallbore rifle
-palma rifle for palma rifle
-service rifle for service rifle
-accurized carbine thumper bolt gun for hunting/stalking
-magazine fed 22lr for giggles + perhaps the odd rimfire silhouette match
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

Ruger 10/22
Atchisson AA12 Shotgun.
Knight's Armament full auto in 7.62
Colt M16A1
Accuracy International AX50

That should cover pretty much everything
