Primary Producer - Category C - Reasons for Cat C

Post by Wilson » 04 Aug 2022, 7:57 pm

Hi,

I am setup as a Primary Producer running 50 cattle on 300 acres.
I want the 22 semi-auto, but not sure what to put on my application for the need for the 22 semi-auto. I want it for dogs, cats and hares,
but don't know how to word the application. They might say just use your bolt action.

They have the 22-semi as Cat C for a reason, but just trying to work out what the targets would be.

Maybe just sheer numbers, follow up shots for runners, reduced impact on my working dogs hearing?

Has anyone applied for this? What did you put on the app?

I will also get the semi-12 Gauge, but that one is a bit more clear, for effective culling and shooter safety when engaging multiple pigs/deer.

I am not a primary producer and not living in QLD but wish I was , however you could say something like , For fast follow-up shots on feral dogs which is now difficult for you due to stiff ness in your bolt working hand from farm injuries .

Is it worth paying maybe. 300 bucks to a firearms specialist solicitor for some advice on your application ? Don’t ask me how I arrive at that figure

I’m in Vic, so maybe not much use to you.
But for my primary producer cat c application I used a rabbit problem as my reason for needing a semi auto, didn’t really need to go into any more detail than that.
What guns are you going to get with your cat c?
.22, .22wmr, 223, 243, 308, 303, 20ga, 12ga

Rabbit problems can come and go and the authorities can check with DPI and others to see if there is a problem in the area speaking theoretically . They can't prove weather you have a stiff painful hand or not so the reason can last indefinitely . That's my theory anyway .

Idd be more worried giving advice to someone with just one post on this forum.

But firearms solicitor is a great idea. Or your local gunshop.

Thanks for the advice everyone...

Yeah, it's my first post in this forum.

Been a shooter for 30 years, did time in the Army, normally solve problems for myself.
Just thought I'd put it out there to get some feedback from other people that might have had the same question.

It's good to also get responses from people that have no real answers to the question as well!

Happy shooting!

The hares up here don't pose the problem the rabbits do down your way, and I'm running cattle, not crops.

I had an old Sterling Model 20 (I think) semi-auto 22 way back, before the change in laws.
Leaning toward the H&K 416 because it has the aluminium receiver, over the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22, which has polymer.
With the Picatinny rails, easy to mount my hunting torch and red dot.
I just think they would be awesome fun and WAY more effective on dogs and hares.
A semi-auto 22 is pretty bloody versatile.

I am a bit suspect about this enquiry see below. I also would NOT be mentioning the "hand" bit. That is something they may just look into and you would need to justify it.
Also not in your state !
