.223 for pelts?

Post by south » 28 Aug 2014, 11:37 am

Hi guys,

I know 22LR is the favourite, but can .223 be used and still get whole, good conditions pelts?

Would adding range help or is it just too powerful to use if you want pelts?

I know in europe they use centerfire rifles to take down animals for pelts. I also know they are very good at patching the pelts too. I'd say an educated guess would be to use FMJ type ammo.

you want something that would pencil through, two little holes instead of a huge hole  +1 for the fmj,,or you could go for a texas heart shot ? but only if its tail was out of the way

You'd need shots only. I use 40gn hp bullets (meant for 22 hornets) in my .222. They don't come out the other side of foxes but skinning them is a stinking, disgusting job with all the pulp that used to be guts.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

+1

Light FMJ ammo will give a passable result. Just two small holes to patch.

Load up some 60gr Nosler Partitions.

Turn the first one to mist and scare the others out of their pelts.

Points for creative thinking but I'm not sure that'll work :P
