All of Conn's stuff is good, I particularly enjoyed the Gengis Khan and the War of the Roses series.
Bernard Cornwall is another to look up.

Loss in translation aside, I can recommend Caesar's Gallic Wars, it gives an amazing view into the man to get it in his own words rather that the interpretation of a historian 2000 years after the fact.
