ar2207 for 357mag rifles

Post by bigrich » 01 Jan 2023, 2:09 pm

hey fellas , as the topic title states, has anyone tried loading 158gn projectiles with 2207 ? my rossi has a 24" barrel , so slower powder MAY work even better than the usual 2205 .which doesn't seem to exist anymore  my mates 32-20 seems to love 2207 , this rifle has a 303 barrel on it , so faster twist than original . i seem to recall rossi twist rates in their lever guns are faster for the "modern" 357 and 44mag . i believe that's why both rossi's i've owned have shot better than marlins or other levers with the old slow twist rates.

I been useing 2207 in my 357 rossi with no probs and plenty others doin the same Since the 2205 left our lonely planet and wandered of into the stratosphere 158 lead not jackets. Mine is citadel so prob 16 in barrell i think .. i use sm rifle primers in loads ok for handguns only and sometimes i do more grunty loads specifically for use in rifle. If u have not already done so there’s interesting stuff on MARVIN STUARTS COMPLETE RELOADING FOR THE 357 mag. You will find it on the net. Its mainly old alliant powdes but still very usefull. Mick b put me onto that hes got stacks of exp with all sorts of 357 loads

Mate I have been contemplating the same thing, and a few blokes I have spoken to at the range claim they have been using AR2207 for their 357 Mag albeit with 180gn projectiles.
I’d have thought it would be too slow for the 158gn projectiles??

U know those big bottles of TB that look like a 5 litre bottle of engine oil ... mine is half full Funny thing is since this pistol powder shortage started i have not actually ever had To open and use any. Probably my big stash of red dot sorts me out. Just out of curiosity. Whats advertised prices of T b goin for on sites like used guns ?

I know a guy who sold 1200gm of Trailboss for $800 back in May. I assume some pistol shooter was desperate but even in something like .223 reduced loads that's enough powder for 3000rds or more. Personally I would've hung onto it but he's pretty much gotten out of shooting. For $800 it would make me 1200rds of .30-06 or .303.

I think it's still possible that they may decide not to bother, in which case we'll never see it again. I have possibly enough TB to see me out if I don't plow through it, I've been switching a lot of my reduced loads over to AR2206H but I still have some loads that I prefer to use the Trailboss for.

uncle nick lists 2207 for 180's at around the same speed as 2205 . i was thinking cause i got a 24" barrel 2207 might work with 158's in my rifle . as i stated earlier 2207 works great in a mates 32-20 with a 24" faster twist 303 barrel, when according to data 2207 should be too slow for that caliber . i suppose i should just try some and see in my 357 . either that or drive to south oz to buy big pete's 2205 :)

Mate I would be very interested to hear how it goes for you. Having that 24” barrel will definitely assist with powder burn. I only have a 16.5” barrel so would assume I’d have a few issues with unburned powder.
Please keep us posted mate.

I run 357 Mag rounds using 17.2gn (compressed) 2207 and 180gn Demon/Black Widow powder coated projectiles with magnum primers, the maximum uncompressed load is about 16.4gn.
The Black Widows are .358 which seem to reduce unburned powder slightly over the .357 Demon projectiles, accuracy is excellent for both and seems similar.

This is a hot 357 Mag load but is as much powder as I can get into the case and still seat the projectile within OAL specs so there's no concern about over loading them and certainly no way to over load with a lighter projectile.

In a revolver with a 6" barrel there's a noticeable amount of unburned powder which gets under the extractor and prevents the cylinder from closing eventually, in a Thompson Contender break action with 10" there is a little left behind and in a 16" rifle there's none to see.

The unburned powder is reduced by heavier/larger projectiles, increased powder load or longer barrel but it's only in the revolver where the unburned powder actually matters.

5gn to 10gn in .204 and .223.

About $95 a kg. Much the same as most powders then. But a little goes a long way.

If you can get Berry's .311" 123gn copper-plated they shoot really well in my .30-06, on 15gn of TB makes for a very cheap and accurate 1750fps plinking round.

I was half thinking of selling off 100gram bottles out of my 2.5kg container just to help people out, but if there's a chance they won't make it again, I'll keep it......

I see ADI lists Trailboss loads for pistols, but not for rifles, does anyone use trailboss/357mag in a rifle here?

I would if it were plentiful and available. I would just fill the case and shoot it but my trailboss stash is too valuable for otjer potential uses ... if i needed to load for a 357 rifle i would be useing 2207

I use Trailboss in .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and all other rifle cartridges, and 12ga. shotgun. It's extremely versatile, but velocity-limited as you can only fit so much of it into a case. If the case holds 30gn of a conventional rifle powder you will probably only fit about 10gn of TB into it.

I tried 20gn to 25gn loads under 330gn of #7-1/2 shot with different stacks of cards to make up the shot column height, no wad or shotcup, just a card tube to prevent pellet contact with the bore, and a card on top under the star crimp. It doesn't make enough velocity for live targets, in my opinion, and probably not for clays either, but it's low noise, low recoil.
