If eventually you don't want to cry three times I would save a little more and get a Leupold vx-3 2.5 to 8 best scrub bashing scope I ever used up here in East Gippsland you don't say whether you're stalking or dogging or both dogging I'd just go straight to a red dot preferably reflex sight

Good choice.

I currently have a S1 Sightron 3-9×40 on my 30.06. So far so good after about 100 rounds. Leopold 3-9×40 would be a good choice. But watch the + hairs, some are a bit fine for thick scrub or in low light.

Another vote for the Leupold 2.5-8
Had one on my 308 scout for ages and have since shifted it to the 416 Ruger.

If you can't find something that'll work for 700 there's a problem.....I'm using a vortex 2-7×32 on my 308,its brilliant, better than the leupolds I've had,and I only paid $200 for it second hand but in brand new boxed condition.

The best most accurate rifle in the world is only as good as it's scope regardless of what the naysayers say far as I'm concerned you spend 1000 bucks on the gun you spend just about as much on a scope don't worry I had my share of crying once twice or five times when I was younger not anymore I go without until I can afford what I need.

I've got scopes I've paid nothing for that work brilliantly for their intended purpose that people were going to throw away.....I've also spent considerable money on scopes thinking they'll improve my accuracy only to find they don't so I sold them off.....but I'm no longer range shooter and never want to be.

I’ve got that same scope, but on a 22. I have a Leupold 3-9x40 on my 22 mag, and I like the Vortex a lot better.

i have the same scope on my 9.3x62 . good for close in and longer shots . personally i don't think the the new vx3 cds are as good a qaulity as the older vx3 and vx3i . talk about crying over a scope purchase , i have a 2-10 vx5 30mm tube on my 6.5x55 tikka , but it's the best scope i've ever owned

Built like tank tracking is impeccable reasonably good glass even better if you get to the higher models but in excess of $4,000 not for me I have used mine (on my 3rd) out to the Mile 1760 yards always returns to zero as I say tracking is impeccable but it's definitely not a stalking scope far from it.

I had a Tasco World Class 3-9x on my 25/06 for years and it would shoot half inch groups.

In all honesty on a 308 scrub gun for Sambar I think this would be pretty hard to go past .
