Fallow Deer 2024 Rut

Post by Oldbloke » 05 Apr 2024, 5:00 pm

Well who is having a crack. I hope to head off for 2-3 days later next week. I got luck last year and shot a spiker, my first.

Not many about where I go but not fussy and little experience anyway. Last I looked bush was dense. So won't be easy.

Rut should start very soon. Word is, a few are starting to croak now.

Well, I could out of action. :x
Heal of the left foot was tender yesterday. Woke up this morning and I can't walk. Pretty dam sore. Lucky to have some crutches in the shed. So I can get about the house.

I'm booked in to see Dr on Wednesday am to get a prescription made out so, (was planning on leaving Thursday) hopefully it will get sorted quickly. I had same thing about a year ago, same heel, took weeks to settle down on its own.

My planned trip to the range on Monday is out to now.

I don't think so.
Can't put weight on the heal but tender to touch at the rear of the heal. I'll know more Wednesday I guess.

Big time. Timing is crap. I always seem to miss the fallow rut. :unknown:

I think it could be inflamed Plantar fasciitis.
Took an anti inflammatory pill this morning.

No mate. Not an injury like an impact in the normal sense. So, got my doubts it would work. Ice packs are used to restrict blood vessels. That's how they prevent inflammation.

See how it goes, may try one tomorrow tho.

I'm pretty happy. My second fallow hunt and second fallow.
He stepped out into a small clearing just a few minutes after sunset. I guess you would call him representative.

130gr doing about 2750fps out of my old 30.06 at abt 100 or 110 yards

Cut up and hanging in a fridge now.
Lot of damage to both shoulders.
Lungs were jelly.
Hornady 130gr pill is now 116gr.

A bit of advice needed.

Got him just after 6pm.
He was a bit stinky,,,rutting.
Was cut up in back of ute at camp by say,, ,,9.
4 legs, back straps, heart, liver, some neck.
Over night was 9-10c
Next day by say 9.30 he wrapped up in a tarp with a bag of ice and on the way home.
By about 1.30pm he was hanging in a fridge set to 3.8c
Lot of shoulder damage so thinking they will be mostly dog meat.

I'm confident he was cooled sufficiently.
But meat smells. I'm assuming due to the rut.
Will he be ok to eat?
Or likely dog meat?

He should be ok. Might need some spices lol.

I went and checked a spot where I know a buck is holed up at work today. I haven't been there for a month. Lots of freshly smashed trees and the area smelled like a dairy,so I've set up a couple of game cameras and backed off outta there. Manager of the block is on holidays and although he's given me free reign to hunt there I still won't without his express permission on a hunt by hunt basis. But setting up cams is fine
