WA to Qld for Guided Hunt Aeroplane Rules etc

Post by Faedy » 15 May 2024, 10:42 pm

Hey all.
Im going to be flying from Perth to Rockhampton in July with 1 firearm.
Can anyone help enlighten me as to what I need to do permit wise, and gun carry case etc.
No doubt if I ask authorities, I will get the run around and general confusion..
TIA.

Shouldn't require any permits going out of WA, WA is the only state requiring permits to bring licenced firearms into it. I guess it's possible they might expect you to have a permit to bring your rifle back in but that would be even more ridiculous than WA could manage I think.
Any firearm/ammo you take must be legal to possess in Qld.
You must be allowed to hunt in your home state to hunt interstate. If your rifle is club licenced I don't think it would be legal to use it for purposes outside of your genuine reason.
Talk to your carrier as they will have their own policies about packaging and such.

Some states have rules about firearms and ammo on public transport so if you were planning on catching a bus or train that could be an issue - you'd have to check regarding Qld.

Queensland recognises licences from within the commonwealth. Only calibre banned in QLD is 50bmg but I am going to assume you won't be bringing in that rifle so you will be fine.

Go to google. Type in "Queensland weapons regulation 2016" go to the legislation.qld.gov.au page(1st result), view pdf(top middle) and go to section 95(2) and 95(3). That contains your answer how to store it when away from your primary storage. .

I have linked a couple of things that would be handy knowing. I would get a TSA or airline approved hard case. Like an Evolution gear hard case with the foam on the inside for protection, cause the bag handler’s are rough and tough on everything. Also for transporting of the firearm when you in QLD as well, you want to make sure it locked up.

I hope you find this helpful.

dunno if it's changed, but i flew to darwin from brisbane and back about 2 years ago and had no issues . rifle was checked in luggage in a good lockable hard case , ammo and bolt in a checked in bag with my jocks and socks, and it was all good . just gotta declare everything at check in .
hardly got a second glance at darwin airport , but had some people talking nervously to each other watching me carry a gun case through brissy airport . christ some people are just plain silly and ignorant . i flew virgin australia with no issues

Good morning,

I fly plenty with guns and ammo. I will talk strictly about carriage only. The airlines like your gun in a locked case by itself (not packed in a suitcase with other items) and preferably a hard case. Ammo is max 5kg. Declare both at checkin. They will wrap your bag in tape and escort you to oversized baggage to drop it. At the other end it will come to oversized baggage pickup area or baggage services. If you are flying Qantas they want you to apply for carrier permission before you fly. It's just an easy online form and the permission is emailed straight to you. Virgin you dont need to do anything prior. This advice is for within Australia only. International there is more permits, abf etc. The airlines have plenty of good information on their website. Just google qantas firearms and ammunition or virgin firearms and ammunition. Have a good trip

All good info.

Just add to this, your maximum ammo limit is 5kg including the packaging. And make sure the ammo is not loose but is in an ammunition box (eg case guard) or original package wich keeps it all without it loose.

The ammo must be in your checked luggage and this must locked, along with your hard case.

The firearm(s) must be unloaded and preferably bolt removed (if possible). Magazines empty.

Any make of firearm hard case will do. We fly every week on all airlines and they are all acceptable.

Some airlines tape your luggage (suitcase) that has the ammo in it, some don't. If untaped, it will come out with normal baggage. I recently had the firearms cases come out on the carousel  so be careful, collect baggage first then go collect gun cases.

Have your firearms licence ready to give them at checkin - the WA Extract of licence is fine.
