cheapo rectangular or squarangular drink bottle

Post by mickb » 29 Oct 2024, 10:56 pm

Looking for a drink bottle around 1.5L capacity fellas with a square or rectangular base so it stacks a little better in a very small hunting pack along side some other items . Also would consider something found in the supermarket full of drink I can drain and use, as usually they are lighter than proper water bottles and still pretty tough. A 2L milk bottle is just a bit too fat to work

Supermarket sourced orange juice bottle maybe? A "Grove" juice bottle is 1.5L, clear and really thick plastic and square based. It has a larger than normal cap and is great to drink from.
I use them when they are empty for rain water for taking on quads and buggies so I have tough water bottles for drinking. Even use them for my two togs that always come with me.

For inside a pack I like the 600mm Coke bottles, you can flatten them when empty and they weigh nothing, they cost nothing, they last forever, and they're small enough to fit into little spaces, or just hang them on the outside of the pack using the Molle clips for bottles. I bought a ten-pack of Platatac's square profile one-litre bottles years ago. I carried one or two of these on my belt all the time for years. But they are quite bulky so the last couple years I've been using standard army water bottles for every day use (I think they hold 1100ml). When I've been taking a pack bush lately I've been using a two-litre Golden Circle pure pineapple juice bottle in my pack to hold extra water, it's rectangular and fits in the pack pretty neatly. All I drink is rainwater and this bottle has been on my desk or in my pack every day for just over a year now. We were figuring that I've probably had the lid on and off more than 5000 times, and cross-threaded it countless times. It's still doing the job but I did suggest to Rose that perhaps it's due for replacement :-)

Some of the long life milks come in squarish bottle of 1lt capacity particularly the nut juice ones (I refuse to call them milk). Good wash out and should be good.

Another great reason to replace my old bottle :-)

Maleny Dairy milk came in 1L Rectangular bottles; not sure they are available in your area.
They look about ideal for what you are looking for.
About half the height and half the diameter of the regular 2L bottles, and slightly squarer.

I've also seen one of the fresh-made fruit juices retailed in similar bottles, in my local IGA.

Might be worth a look?

Yep, can get them in 1L or something I think, and more resistant to damage than an orange juice bottle etc.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I thought I had maybe asked a weird question but looks like a lot of hunters think about this stuff. I ended up spending the money on a cheapo oztrail level CamelBak. Never been a huge fan of drinking bladders, I've already detached the long cumbersome drinking hose and will just use it as a regular bladder. Will see how it goes

I have a couple of them, one backpack style, one bumbag style, but could not use either type. The backpack one got in the way of the stock when I shouldered my rifle (surprised me how annoying it was) and the bumbag one got in the way of my normal belt and moved to much when running.

Yeah that's why I got rid of the hose and just capped it off at the bladder. To be honest I've always wondered at the real need to have this drinking hose almost at your face. I remember when these things got popular in the army and I likened it to a horse with a feed bag strapped to its face lol.

If you are riding a motorbike then they are excellent. This is why I have mine. The backpack type was when I used to ride dirt bikes, and the bumbag one is great on my road bikes. In hot weather you can have a drink without stopping, and there is no way I end up drinking enough if I only drink when stopped. Excellent for this application. I have never used one in the bush hunting though, as they are not comfortable enough for me when on foot.

Would be great bushwalking. But I don't do that!

Yeah I am probably part of another school that doesn't believe in or need the constant sipping of water. Any breaks I take, whether hourly or more on the trail or working in north qld it's as easy to dump the pack or work gear for a rest and drink normally. Never been dehydrated enough to bother otherwise.

Motorbike riding I know nothing about, only sat on one once when I was 14 :) so wont naysay it for that purpose. Or anyone elses purpose, whatever works for the individual.

I'm oldschool too and I sip water all day, that's why I carry it on my belt. Rose will drink a litre in one go then be fine for hours, it depends on what you've acclimatised your body to I think. During the winter I'm drinking a little over two litres a day, as it gets warmer that rises significantly, to more than double, and probably double again if I'm out working in the sun. I drank five litres in five hours one day last week when we saw 30C here.

On long trips on the bike I hang a backpack across the screen with a bottle and a tube to drink from, with a helmet the drinking tube is the best way to keep your fluids up.

Blade I am probably like your Rose regarding periodic guzzling. By older school I meant in the old days where you maybe didnt even have a canteen, you worked until you got back to the water cart, billy or end of the cane cutting row you were on an hour later. Not my era but definetly my style. I remember working in the middle east with Russians they were amazed at the Aussies sipping water all the time. Both groups did about as well in the hot sun once acclimated as you say, horses for courses.
