Gunstore rumour regards Sierra Ammo

Post by Over The Hill » 31 Oct 2024, 7:07 pm

Maybe old news but new to me, overheard a conversation in my lgs where the store rep was saying that since Sierra are now manufacturing their own ammunition that they are considering stopping sales of their projectiles to other manufacturers in order to boost sales of their own lines of factory ammo. According to the shop sales guy there is a decision pending in coming months on this. If true and actually happens this would impact some of the ADI lines, especially in 223 & 308 where the Matchking, Gameking and Blitzkings are a popular factory round.

If nothing else, at least another reason to go buy more now :D

Anything is possible but it seems unlikely. Other bullet manufacturers produce their own ammo and still supply bullets to other ammo manufacturers, Hornady for example.

It is possible just look at alliant powder thay no longer supply the canister market because of factory round production so it is not too much of a stretch to see a projectile manufacturer in the same predicament just look at berger amazing how short there projectiles are to come by now since they have been loading their own ammunition not many people hand load these days

Given how much commercial ammo is loaded using Sierra projectiles, I just cant see that Sierra are going to be able to fill the gap if they only sell loaded ammo.

Seems they would be shooting themselves in the foot with a very large shotgun.

Doesnt mean it's impossible, but not sure it's a smart move for Sierra.

How is this Sierra "shooting themselves in the foot"? Even IF this plan by Sierra limits how many projectiles can be supplied to the reloading market, Sierra now will sell potentially MORE projectiles, can increase production and take advantage of making MORE profit.
That's what commercial businesses want. And more Sierra projectiles in loaded ammo is a good thing for factory ammo shooters.
We'll see.
If you think that's going to happen, stock up. There won't be a downside.
Hoarding? Who cares if some idiot calls you a hoarder, I buy everything with a view to have stock on the shelf for the future, if that makes me a hoarder, that makes the person calling me a hoarder a fool that I won't waste time on again.
The same clowns said we were hoarders during Covid when we went on a 3hr round trip into town to buy groceries and had stupid limits... these germs told us, "just come back tomorrow and get your daily limit". By lemmings who could bicycle to their jobs telling us 3hrs away what we need. Yep, same self-important opinionated idea from those who'd be tyrants if they could get away with it.

The thread got me wondering so I had a look through my stock and was surprised to see that I use very few Sierra bullets. I have quite a few different types just for testing but the Sierra bullets I actually use are the 55gn Gameking (Superoo), the 100gn .284" HP and the 168gn .308" Matchking. The first and last I already have a lifetime supply of, but it's possible I might one day want some more of the 100gn for the 7mm-08 (I already have lots of other choices in stock I can use to fill the roll if the 100gn were unavailable), and if I decided to get into rifle competition I might have to get more 168gn SMK's, but that's unlikely. I don't use any factory centrefire ammo either. So, while I think Sierra is a great company, whatever they do is unlikely to have any effect on me anyway. Looking through the list I mostly use Hornady for smaller calibers and Speer for larger calibers, and I probably have more than enough of them to see me out.

Yep, no downside to having what you need right there on your shelves. I still have good stock of CCI Standard Velocity, but as it's not readily available just now I'm keeping it for my long-range practice and pistol shoots and have been stocking up on the really cheap Remington Cyclones for my close-range plinking and practicing. The dealer offered me 50 cases when I asked originally, he may have not taken me seriously, but I've bought four cases in four weeks so far and he still has a pallet load sitting on the floor. My mate that comes out every week figures if he shoots 100rds every week then a case will last him a year, which isn't very long. He's now got three .22 rifles (lever, pump, bolt-action) though so I'm hoping he'll push that number up (at 11c a shot it's very cheap shooting). He's organised for us to go to his mate's place next week for a shoot there. He has a lot more room than I do so we might be able to get the milsurps out there for some much longer-range fun.

As for hoarding, we just put 320kg of prime beef in our freezers, is that hoarding or just good common sense? At under $4/kg I call it smart.

Can't see it happening any time soon.

Maybe for like 223, 6.5 and 308 projies

They could never sell enough factory ammo of some of their more boutique offerings though

OP was relating a rumor about Sierra restricting sales of components to other ammo manufacturers, but original story held no mention of reloading component supplies.
Personally, I hold serious doubts that Sierra would ever be able to cater for all the people who buy factory ammo that (currently)have Sierra projectiles in them.
Hence; those ammo manufacturers will look to other suppliers for projectiles.
Hence, I reckon to take such action, Sierra would be shooting themselves in the foot.

My apologies for having a different take on it to you; I shall give myself a right royal whipping to teach myself a lesson.

Anyway; thats how I look at it.

Wish they would just make projectiles.
The 110gr .277" ProHunter is proving to be an awesome bullet in a reduced load in my 270win.

Of Course..........discontinued.

I dont knock blokes wanting to stock up, its clever preparation. But supported gunstores or others managing the flow at times if it meant there was a chance a new shooter or bloke looking into reloading could make a start.
