Cleaning rod advice?

Post by Gun-nut » 31 Dec 2024, 2:39 pm

Hey all, been looking at purchasing a good quality single piece rod to replace my cheap multi piece rod that I currently use. Been checking out the Dewey nylon coated rods. Would a .22 size rod be suitable for cleaning .30 cal bores as well as my rimfires? I’ve also read concerns people have with nylon rods picking up carbon deposits and potentially damaging the barrel? How much of a concern is this and would this be mitigated by just wiping the rod with an oily rag anyway? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Cheers.

Dewey rods are good. I prefer a 20 cal rod for my rimfire 22's. Most importantly, get yourself a rod guide (as many as you need) for whichever action type you have. Possum Hollow make good ones, but there are also a number of "universal fit" types available.

I use a 22 rod to clean 22 to 308, and an old Parker Hale wood and brass 303 set for everything bigger. I have no concerns at all about the coating on Dewey, or any other makers, rods as grit does not imbed if you handle them even moderately carefully and wipe down after use.

If your 22 is a CZ, the least of your needs will be a 0.17 calibre rod. The ejector in their bolt action rimfires (CZ452, 455 and maybe the 457) sticks up in the way of a rod, forcing it into contact with the chamber, leade and maybe the rifling. Hopefully a 17 rod will miss/avoid the ejector. If it doesn't, I would be getting a rod guide.

Dewey or pro shot top quality. 22 rods up to 270. Over that you need the thicker rod dor 30cal and above otherwise you may bend rod. Try to get aluminium jags they won't give false positives with copper solvent. Nylon brushes are fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will go for the .22 rod for now as the largest calibre I shoot is .303. I’d like to stick with one rod for my rifles for now but may look into a .30 cal specific one down the track if I experience bending etc.

I use a 1 piece 22 rod for 224, 308 and 12g. Have done for 6-7 years

For years I made do with multi piece coated and uncoated rods until treating myself to a couple of these.

Tipton Deluxe1-Piece Carbon Fibre Rod

Seemed everyone in my circle had differing opinions.
Coated is fine, uncoated is safer, brass is better, multi piece is universal, multi piece will ruin the bore.
I purchased two of these and definitely the best investment in rifle cleaning gear I've made.
I cant recall the lengths but have a shorter length one in .22 and a longer one in .27 which covers what I own, (224,243,257,264,270,284,308,311,357 and 12g).
I store them in 40mm electrical conduit which makes them easier to transport. Being one piece they are a long object but no longer than a firearm in any case.
They were bloody expensive (to me at least) when I purchased them and a quick search on the internet proves they still are.

I hate my one piece stainless rod, despite using a bore guide it often comes out with scratches, nasty sharp microscopic galled, sharp edges running the length of the rod.
It's f***ing horrible.

I'd really like to find a nice one piece brass rod.

Is it because its bending in the bore?

For my 310 and 20g I use a single length of aluminium rod, threaded at one end and a wooden knob on the other, just change the brush or whatever, has worked well for many years though I also use my old SLR pull through on the Cadet ............... the cost was far less than the shop bought ....

It occurred to me to ask whether you have one of the CZs that I mentioned, above. The ejector can scratch a rod.

I've used a cheap CF arrow shaft for ages. Will fit the .303 but not the .22 (standard you can buy singly in a shop will be .246 but there are smaller sizes that will fit a .22/.177). Thread sizes on standard brushes/jags are the same as the insert you'll get with a shaft. Mine fits my cleaning guide no issues also. Hell, if you're somewhere near NE Vic, I can probably get one to you free of charge.

I used a long staino .22 cal rod on everything bar the CZ 22 and shotties, the 3piece seems fine for the 22.
I have bent it a few times but it straightens up OK.
I polish it if I feel any scratches but only did it a few times.

Bought a bigger cal shorter rod now for no bending on the hunting rifles.
Just a bad habit to break, wacking too tight patches through with my hand.
